The LG G8 ThinQ could feature an upgraded 4K LCD display
With the LG G7 ThinQ now on sale, it’s only natural that the rumor mill begins focusing on LG’s 2019 flagship, the LG G8 ThinQ. Unlike most information this far ahead of the launch, though, the latest details actually come from a pretty reliable source, Ice Universe.

Moving away from the use of Quad-HD displays, which have been seen on LG's flagships since the LG G3 back in 2014, Ice Universe claims that new rumors are now pointing towards the use of a 4K resolution on the G8 ThinQ next year, although LG isn’t expected to move away from its beloved LCD panels. Instead, these will continue to be exclusive to V-line flagships. The tipster failed to mention exactly why the company is expected to make the change, but the most logical reason would be related to virtual reality technology. After all, the 4K panel would significantly improve the viewing experience and could potentially attract a whole new range of customers that are looking for a smartphone capable of displaying high-quality VR content. Nevertheless, considering the South Korean company has largely failed to show any relative interest in the technology until now, a focus on VR next year would certainly be a bold change in direction for the brand.

In an alternative move, the decision to include a 4K display may simply be a marketing strategy. After all, Samsung is largely expected to feature the new resolution on its 2019 Galaxy S10 series, which is currently set to debut in January. Unlike LG, however, Samsung’s devices will be equipped with AMOLED panels, pitting them up against the AMOLED-equipped LG V40 ThinQ which should be announced in mid-Autumn.

Considering LG’s G8 ThinQ is still at least one year away, it’s certainly too early to guarantee the accuracy of any of these details. After all, LG’s focus at the moment is sure to be shipping as many G7 ThinQ units as possible, as well as preparing the future launch of the V40 ThinQ.
