Alleged iPad mini 2 snaps show the tablet with a fingerprint scanner
The ever resourceful China has sprouted two new snaps, allegedly of the iPad mini 2 in gold, following the trend set by the iPhone 5s and the new color schemes it brought to the table. What's even more interesting, however, is that the shots indicate that the alleged second generation iPad mini may come with a fingerprint scanner – something that we've been considering likely, though we've had no official confirmation of any kind.

If we, for a second, imagine that these are authentic, then it would only make sense that the 9.7-inch iPad 5 will also come equipped with the new Apple tech. And while we sure like the sound of this, do keep in mind that these are anything but confirmed.

Speaking of things that are unconfirmed, equally so is the release date of the new iPad mini 2 and the iPad 5, both. While we've certainly gone through enough failed predictions to warrant a certain level of caution when approaching the topic, it does seem that industry watchers, as a whole, are coming down on an October announcement, at least as far as the iPad 5 is concerned. Unfortunately, while there's currently no reliable information on whether the duo will be unveiled simultaneously by the folks in Cupertino, we've been hearing about the possibility that the iPad mini 2 may not see the light of day before 2014 is upon us.

I'm tempted to buy an iPad, honestly, I want at least 1 iOS 7 device. The logical choice would be to buy an iPad because there's much more support for tablets in iOS, but tablet support in Android is starting to pick up, so now I'm conflicted. I might just keeping Android for my phone and tablet (with my Droid Mini and Nexus 7 or 10), and get an iPod Touch, but I don't want the 5th gen because it's basically an iPhone 4S with a higher resolution display, which I know will struggle on iOS 7, so I have to hope for a 6th gen iPod Touch this year with the A6 chip and 1 GB of RAM. If the iPhone 5C were cheaper, I would buy it unlocked and just use it for music and iOS games, but I'm not paying $600 for a media device. Apple, you're putting me in a tough spot here. I want to buy your products, but nothing you have seems to fit my needs better than other offerings. HELP ME GIVE YOU MY MONEY.

I think for tablet, an iPad is the best that you can get. So far, I haven't found any Android tablet that has the same smoothness as a high end Android or iPad has.

Yep, I have to agree. With all the tablet apps iOS has that actually utilize all the extra screen real estate it would be my choice for tabs. I must say that the first gen iPad mini is perfect size and the screen look very good for not being retina. I find the regular iPad to be a little too big. For $330 you can buy a refurbished iPad mini from Apple and it comes with the same one-year warranty. Walmart might even still be selling them new for that same price. Android is still my choice for phones and Windows 8 for laptops.

to be quite honest, 1GB of RAM is the bottom line. I'd still be ok (not satisfied) with it having a low-res display if the RAM is bumped up to 1 gig. 512MB is just utterly absurd. after all, the retina display will drive up the cost and battery consumption, as well as result in slow production. a lower-than-$330 (hopefully $250~) version of mini with 1GB of RAM will be pretty competitive imo. though i know for sure apple won't do it

Still undecided wether to opt for the mini 2 or ipad 5 - guess it will come down to specs versus portability - Not really bothered about portability but the Mini is just so nice to hold and carry around :S

With Apple going 64bit ... my next iDevice will have a 64bit chip to help future proof it a bit as far as iOS is concerned; otherwise ... it is a no go for me.

Given that this '64bit' A7 architecture doesn't really reap performance benefits useless accompanied with 4+ Gbs or RAM. Apple's insistance on designing devices with paltry 512mb to 1mb ensures that there's no real 'future-proofing' to be had by buying something like an iPhone 5s or anything not having somewhere near 4gb of RAM. These first generation A7 devices will likely end up another iPad 1 (256mb RAm... LOL!) situation, as in only capable of supporting iOS upgrades for around 2years... Pretty piss poor for a device costing between US 499.99 and 929.00.

This new iPad Mini will be totally worth it... Retina Display, Fingerprint sensor, A6 chip (or even the 64-bit A7!) and probably the iPhone 5s camera. WARNING: There might be troll comments below.
