Study suggests that AT&T may overtake Verizon as the top dog in 2011
Verizon was able to dethrone AT&T from the number one spot in the US after they were able to absorb Alltel, but a new study suggests that the number two wireless carrier may be well on its way back to the top spot. IE Market Research said in a new study that the recent higher growth rate achieved by AT&T in the spring versus what Verizon was able to obtain points to a telling tale that AT&T can take the lead by the spring of 2011. Taking advantage of its speculated last days of exclusivity with the iPhone, this might be a possibility if the market stays on its steady course. Looking to the future already, the study said that AT&T could have a healthy lead by 2014 where they would have 34.8 percent of the market versus Big Red's 32.5 percent. Conversely, other researchers have pointed out that the loss of the iPhone's exclusivity could land AT&T in a hot predicament where they might see customers sticking with Verizon if they do happen to land a version of the iPhone next year.

ATT overtake Verizon!! Wow. Thanks I really needed a laugh today!

3. Gwenluvsblackdick unregistered

Haha I agree with u I also needed a good laugh today first of all I think AT&T should first fix there shitty ass network and expand there 3G coverage to more places maybe they can become number 1 if they do that over here in montana verizon, sprint n t-mobile all have 3G except AT&T it's funny cuz u walk in to an AT&T store over here and all of there phones are showing the edge icon because there's no AT&T 3G over here ...

4. imcheatingonmywifewithaguynshe unregistered

ha yes i agree before that happens at&t should first expand there 3G coverage to more places so it can match verizons 3G coverage so whaT if u can surf the web n talk at the same time on at&t if u only get edge in half of the country so its pointless . i have noticed at&t only has 3G on the main citys but once u go out of the city u drop down to edge, gsm or gprs while verizon has 3G in those places i kno this because i have at&t n my friend has verizon and when we took a roadtrip by car from san diego to texas and once we stepped out of the city my blackberry bold 9700 from at&t dropped down to edge n gsm n gprs i never lost signal i was covered all the way so i was able to text n call all the way because i was covered by at&t but it was not 3G coverage it was edge n gsm and my friend with verizon had 3G ALL THE WAY. so he was able to listen to pandora radio all the way onb his bb storm without a problem because he had 3G and i couldnt because it was frustating because it would always have to rebuffer and it took forever to play because most of the time i had edge and gsm . so yea before at&t comes number one in the USA i think they should FIRST improve their 3G coverage ! because its CRAP once u get out of the city ...

Nothing wrong with AT&T's network. For me it works better than any other network out there.

Same here. AT&T actually has really good service for me. I honestly would use them over Verizon. The services are similar, but I like AT&T's phones better.

19. madonna_fan unregistered

well i also gotta admit i like at&t's phone selection more than verizons but im da kind of gurl that cares more about having 3G reception in more places thats why i have verizon ....

I know! Ok first, if the iphone comes to verizon, wat will AT&T have!? With the hole droid line, it will only increase, making verizon even better, and if they actually get the Motorola Droid X10, its officially DONE!! lol

Yah not Shhhht.. That is for sure something I will not be expecting any time soon.. AT&T would have to dramatically improve their overall reception and indoor penetration to really be concider good enoug for others to go with it and ignore Verizon's way better network not just for DATA but also call reception.. I know both soon will be LTE but regardless, I seriously dont see Verizon fall out out all specially if in the near future Verizon do get the iPhone and with its current line up of Super Awesome Android phones. I would have to say to ATT,, HELL NO!!!

Remember Suckrizon fanpeople, you didn't become the largest till you bought out Alltel and that didn't put you ahead by much. Hmmm, think if AT&T bought out T-Mobile, who would be the largest then?

54. ur really stupid unregistered

interesting that you bring up mergers. where would at&t be without the cingular/at&t wireless merger back 6 yrs ago? cell phone carriers merge all the time. you should get your info b4 you comment. i believe at&t would have had cingular through the at&t landline/hbc merger but not at&t wireless. see at&t wireless was a seperate company to at&t. at&t wireless merged with cingular. cingular/hbc was bought out by at&t. so as u can see mergers mean nothing but growth. everyone merges sooner or later. in 15 yrs there wil be only 2 contracted carriers and a couple of prepaid.....

Not really difficult to believe - but, I believe to speculate as far ahead as 2014 is foolish. Both of these companies will eventually top 100 million - Verizon, then AT&T - T-Mbobile and Sprint better hold on and hope they have enough to survive.

I'm glad you pointed this out...I wonder if those two (T-Mobile & Sprint) will be able to survive. I like T-Mobile over here because I always have reception (Southern Cali). I wonder if they would merge...

the problem i have with this article, is it is pure speculation based on current sales. concidering the last report included the launch of the iphone4, it had a boost in sales. If the iphone really does finally go to VZW, the boost in sales will belong to them. Since VZW still trumphs ATT in almost every quarter anyways, i dont find the reason this reviewer thinks ATT will tackle VZW.. especially without the iphone. Take away the iphone sales and ATT is never anywhere near VZW, and they never had an "iphone". If the exclusivity ends, so does ATTs ability to catch up. If VZW had an exclusivity on the iphone instead of ATT, VZW would have like a 10 million lead on ATT minimum. Its the ONLY thing that keeps ATT in the #2 spot. It sure as hell aint their cheap plans, great coverage, or fast speeds... LOL. Tmo and sprint cant/wont merge until they are both on LTE so that is years away. And i really dont see a benefit of the merger because Sprint is a very high debt company. Having more customers doesnt automatically mean you make more money. If they found an idiot to buy Nextell or just shut it down, it would be more plausable after they move to LTE.

Remix, without iphone, AT&T is still number 2, easily. If Verizon gets iphone in 2007, then AT&T may have gone DROID....who knows. Verizon is number one because of the ALLtel merger as AT&T was leading right after it got the iphone and has done better than big V in most quarters recently, except the 2Q 2010. Either way, I doubt it will happen, but again, to speculate into 2014 is asanine. Currently, with LTE on the way (advanced LTE is the only true recognized 4G network and no one has that yet), Verizon should do just fine - both companies will be fine as number 1 or 2, and their CEOs rather have the nice profits than worry about being number 1 or 2....BTW, 3Q will probably belong to AT&T due to iphone 4 as it has sold over 4 million to date....

go back and look at the reports, there networkdood.. ATT is not out pacing VZW in most quarters, its normally quite the opposite. ATT has only outpaced them in like 2 or 3 quarters in the last few years. And if i remember correctly, they were iphone launch quarters. VZW has always won the lowest churn award exept for 1 whole quarter from recently. first time in eons that ATT had it. LTE + no iphone exclusivity + 10x better network = VZW will never lose to ATT without massive mergers. VZW has what.. a 2 to 3 year head start on ATT for LTE... its not a contest. And i whole heartedly beleive.. as do many apparently, that the second the iphone jumps ship, so do about 10 million customers after their contracts run out. to VZW for better service at the same price, or to Tmo and Sprint, for better service at a cheaper price.

I agree with you 99%, the part I didn't agree with was the "10 million customers will jump when their contracts are up"... I dont think 10 million people would wait that long. ETF's out the wazoo.

The fucking lemmings that did this survey must be the same fuck-mooks that have been doing market speculations on Wall Street. AT&T sucks all over the boards. Shitty reception, lack of quality data transmission, dropped calls frequently, and a bunch of dipshits working for them. The best thing I ever did was lose their service. So when all this shit happens as stated in this article, should I look outside my window as well to see if there are flying pigs circling AT&T's tower? You people should try predicting the weather too. GTFO.

+1 agreed... and the above posts 3 and 4 are more or less the same uneducated remarks made every single time anything(rumor, post, news, etc..) comes up about att or verizon or vice versa--funny how none of the damn fanboys out there give any care or hatred to sprint or t-mo. lol.. pretty much your typical ignorant consumers(fanboys) that don't know what the hell 3G even means... 1xrtt is a "3G" technology, but in most areas is slow as shit and only good for voice ... whereas att's "2G/Edge" network is usually faster than 1xrtt but adds ability for simultaneous voice and data, oh but wait 2G can do that?--yep oh and EVDO -- a faster "3G" tech(still no voice and data at same time) is a joke compared to att's "3G" UMTS/HSPA networkwhen it comes to flexibility and capability. All these comments come really as no surprise seeing that so many people don't have any idea what 2G or 3G is and heaven help us 4G is now in the mix... att and verizon have damn near the exact same coverage coast to coast, just differences in speed and voice/data technologies. Verizon has a really good voice network, but att has a far more capable data network. Each have good and bad, att just takes more heat because they have a bunch of cry-baby iphone customers that are so spoiled 95% of the time, that when any hiccup comes along(because of all the freakish consumer and data usage growth on att's network over the past couple of years) they freak out and start bitching--well, most of the bitching seems to come from journalists in san fran and nyc and fanboys like the ones above, but nonetheless they don't seem to realize how pretty good they have it most of the time. att WILL lose some customers, but a lot will come back once they realize how different it is over on the red team, same as they do right now. why do you think verizon is in such a rush to get LTE up and running? hmmm? come on people, read a little on your own and educate yourselves outside of posts like this one and not just listen/"learn" what the numb nuts in marketing tell you with their tv commercials... .

Speakin as a Verizon doesn't seem too unrealistic for AT&T to overtake Verizon at some point. That's business...sometimes the other guy has a better run. There is a constant battle to become #1 so to think that Verizon will be in the #1 spot for "all eternity" would be kinda arrogant. Both carriers have leading products so why not? Just like the smartphone war. More often than not manufacturers release a device, then later on that year the device gets trumped by next why would wireless carriers be diff. King of the i stand by my home team, but nothin wrong with a little healthy competition.

ok i just have 1 freaking question maybe u know the answer because i cant find one how the hell can u make video calls on the evo on 3G mode? i have one and i do not live in a 4G area. but i can make video calls on 3G. how is that possible?? ive done it pleanty of times over 3G and no i am not connected to wi-fi . and it works pretty dam good. so maybe u know the answer? because i read online that 3G cdma what sprint uses could not do voice and data at the same time which in order to make a video call u need voice and data at the same time .. u dnt believe me look it up online or try it over 3G if u have an evo it works fine over 3G . so how is that possible? im confused u kno the answer please explain to me thanks ..

Where does this article mention anything about the network? It just simply states that if things continue as is AT&T will surpass Verizon. If they are gaining this many customers and keeping churn on pace with VZ with a "shitty network" as all the claims state, imagine where they would be with a so called better network. I have had them since 04 and have never had an issue. Actually VZ ranks last in service quality here behind T Mobile. Nothing against VZ, AT&T just fits my needs better.

It's Verizon employees who always scream Network, Network. It's kind of like the crazy guy at a movie screaming fire, just so he can get a better seat. Fuck Verizon Employees so brainwashed by the network and test man. Now tthhey wat torule the air WTF is that shit

Is it really brainwashed if its true? Your network sucks, plain and simple. Even some Att employees admit the service isn't as good as VZW. That is what we invested in, just like Att invested in their lineup. They do have a better selection of phones, because that where they put their money. So please think about what you are saying before you get on PA saying, "Fuck Verizon Employees". We work really hard to make our company what it is just like ATT employees work to make theirs what it is. No need to get personal about any of this.

When I'm in the field and have to work with an AT&T employee, why is it that they always ask me if were (VZW) hiring...Hmmm must not be that fun at AT&T - I'm just saying.

Great points - to have a perceived 'bad' network and be in the position that they currently have is amazing. Where I live, I get 3MB speeds - works great for drop calls.
