Bixby can live in your Samsung refrigerator now

Back when Bixby was announced alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung made sure to let us know that it won't be a feature exclusive to its smartphones. Little did we know that the first product that will receive Bixby, other than its newest flagship smartphones, was going to be a refrigerator.

Yesterday, the South Korean tech giant announced that its Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators will now come with a pre-loaded Bixby AI. Units that were already installed in users' homes will instead receive the feature through a software update.

If you're wondering what a digital assistant can do with your fridge, you're not alone. Fortunately, Samsung made sure to explain this, too. Having Bixby in your fridge means you'll be able to search for recipes and weather data, as well as play music and radio, by issuing the corresponding voice commands.

This move is quite obviously just the first step into smart home appliances by Samsung. However, it has a long road ahead if it wants to compete with Google Assistant or Amazon's Alexa, both in smartphones, and the IoT sector.

“The digital assistant Bixby can [teach] itself by analyzing user's voice commands,” said a Samsung official, adding that the Family Hub 2.0 fridges will provide services that are nothing like we've seen before.
