Google keeps focus on design by purchasing Timely developer Bitspin
Somehow, a bit of interesting news slipped through the cracks over the weekend as we were getting revved up and ready for CES in Las Vegas: Google has purchased Bitspin. Bitspin is best known as the developer of the highly regarded Timely app on Android. Timely has been widely cited as one of the best designed apps of the year, which is likely the aim of Google with this acquisition.

Bitspin announced the deal on its website, saying:

We're thrilled to announce that Bitspin is joining Google, where we'll continue to do what we love: building great products that are delightful to use.
For new and existing users, Timely will continue to work as it always has. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded our app and provided feedback along the way; we truly appreciate all your support.

The Timely app is still in the Google Play Store and doesn't look to be going away, which is great news. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, and it is also unclear what projects the Bitspin team will be working on as they join the Google team. But, let's face it, Google doesn't really need developers who make good alarm clock apps; Google definitely needs quality designers to continue the company's new-found focus on design. We would love to see what the Bitspin team can do with the design of some Google products.

The app has a great UI that already complements Android's design very nicely. I'd like to see what Google has in store for Bitspin in their future *COUGH COUGH* SMARTWATCH USER-INTERFACES *COUGH COUGH* endeavors!

This was a good buy.
I use this exclusively over stock.

Look forward to it's integration, and morphing throughout the OS.

So where's the complaints about google buying companies and adding to their own offerings?

I think you have a valid point. Most people who complain about apple buying companies probably won't complain about Google buying companies. But there is a reason for that. The outcomes for Apple and Google buying companies are quit different. Most likely, anyone who has Timely right Apple likes to buy a companynow, will still be able to enjoy it. But when apple bought the company that made Siri, people with older iPhone and iPads with one of their favorite apps missing. Apples response... Upgrade!

As a former OG iPad owner, I can say from experience... that along with"you're holding it wrong"really changed how a lot of people felt about apple.

I commented about it two days back, on the post about apple's some acquisition of some app company, but maybe PA didn't noticed it.......Timely is really very well designed app. and I use it over regular alarm app of android.....
