Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition is updated to Android Oreo

You might remember the Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition. This is the refreshed version of the Galaxy Note 7, the handset that had the nasty habit of exploding. Recalled twice, Samsung finally agreed to take it off the market for good even though many were willing to risk their lives to continue to use the phone. Samsung had to deactivate recalled units that were not sent back. That's how good the Galaxy Note 7 was perceived to be. At the time, it most likely would have been the largest selling Samsung smartphone of all time had issues with the batteries not forced Sammy to pull the model.

In July of last year, months after Samsung deactivated the last of the Galaxy Note 7 units, it unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Note Fan Edition. Samsung took some parts from Galaxy Note 7 units that were returned, and some from those that were never sold. It updated the chipset under the hood, replacing the Snapdragon 820 mobile platform with the Snapdragon 821 SoC. It also replaced the 3500mAh battery that was the source of the explosions, with a lower capacity 3200mAh cell. A limited number of Galaxy Note Fan Edition units were produced for purchase in Korea only.

According to a report published today, the Galaxy Note Fan Edition is being updated to Android Oreo. The models receiving the update starting today are the ones produced for LG Uplus and SK Telecom. Other carrier branded versions will be receiving the update soon. Besides the new build of Android, the update includes the April security patch.
