Xiaomi Mi 5 Will Use Snapdragon 820 Asserts Kevin Wang
Xiaomi's upcoming Mi 5 has been one of the best kept secrets this season, as there haven't been many firm rumors about its purported specs, price or release date just yet. Granted, there is some speculation on the eventual 5.2" screen size, or rumors going back and forth if it will sport a Snapdragon 820 or Helio X20 chipset, but that's about it.

As if to clarify the processing power a bit more, CEO Kevin Wang of the research firm IHS dispelled the rumor that Xiaomi is having royalty quarrels with Qualcomm, hence may be shipping with a Helio X20. Those rumors were circling the Chinese blogosphere recently, but the analyst said there are no beefs between Xiaomi and Qualcomm, and the Mi 5 is on track to ship exclusively with Snapdragon 820. Qualcomm is an early investor in Xiaomi, after all, so it wasn't exactly clear how could the two companies have a spat about patents anyway. Earlier today we saw a purported Xiaomi Mi 5, codenamed as Gemini, leak in the Geekbench database with Qualcomm's MSM8996 onboard, which is none other than Snapdragon 820.

When the 820 was being unveiled yesterday, Qualcomm's marketing chief said that its fastest chipset to date has won more than 60 device designs that will carry it, but they are all coming early next year, so maybe the rumored December 3rd announcement date for the Mi 5 won't pan out in that case, or the actual release could be closer to the Chinese New Year in the beginning of February. In any case, the Mi 5 is shaping up to be one of the first phones with Snapdragon 820, which alone can give it a head start then.
