Sprint's Direct Connect Now app brings push-to-talk to the Kyocera Rise with more phones coming
Sprint has launched its new Direct Connect app that allows the user to turn an Android phone into one with push-to-talk capabilities. Right now, the app works on just one device, the Kyocera Rise. It is expected to be compatible to the upcoming LG Optmus Elite. Sprint plans on adding more phones to the list of those that will be able to support the new app, based on Qualcomm's PTT technology. The app allows Sprint to offer Direct Connect to a larger range of customers.

The Sprint Direct Connect Now app installed on the Kyocera Rise works on both Nextel Direct Connect or Sprint Direct Connect. Users can connect to a group as large as 21 people. Call alerts can be sent to other members alerting them that you want to talk. Touchscreen controls make it easy to use and the speaker's contact image appears on the screen during the conversation. A 'favorites' list can be put together to make it easier to contact those you speak to the most using Direct Connect.

Sprint has over 1 million Direct Connect customers for the service which started last October. The carrier is expected to phase out the iDEN network previously associated with its PTT service on June 30th 2013 and now offers the feature over a CDMA pipeline using phones like the Android flavored Motorola Admiral. Sprint's new Direct Connect service covers triple the square miles that was previously covered by the Nextel National Network and domestic PTT calls are setup instantly. PTT can now be used in Latin America countries where the service is used often.
