Apple sets new record: 9 million iPhone 5s and 5c sold, iOS 7 'fastest software upgrade in history'
CUPERTINO, Calif., Sep 23, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Apple(R) today announced it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone(R) 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new iPhones on September 20. Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.
"This is our best iPhone launch yet--more than nine million new iPhones sold--a new record for first weekend sales," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c feature iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, featuring a stunning new user interface, completely redesigned with an elegant color palette, distinct, functional layers and subtle motion that make it feel more alive. iOS 7 has hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop(R), enhanced Photos, Safari(R), Siri(R) and introduces iTunes Radio(SM), a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes(R).(3) Over 11 million unique listeners have already tuned in to iTunes Radio since launch with the most listened to song being "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake.
Every customer who buys an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c at an Apple retail store will be offered free Personal Setup service, helping them customize their iPhone by setting up email, showing them new apps from the App Store(SM) and more, so they'll be up and running with their new iPhone before they leave the store. "Over the last three days, Apple sold a combined 9 million iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C units,"
Same and same lie flooded all over the tech media. LOL
Does they forget , that 5C was on sale 10 days ago????
"Over the last three days" was only 5S version.
Why Apple didn't announce the split numbers? Besides , SHIPPING to the US carriers , and upgrading US zombies contracts, doesn't mean much. Right?

You sound mad bro. Give credit to where it's due. You will not see any other company sell this many phones in 3 days. It'll only be the iPhone 6 that will beat this record.
Imagine how many more they could have sold if they didn't run out of the 5S after a few minutes.

I canceled my order for the silver one. I'm going for the gold.
91. PapaSmurf (Posts: 8300; Member since: 14 May 2012)
The gold one looks the best. 16, 32 or 64GB?
98. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5478; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
I think that "Space Gray" looks better. :)
99. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5478; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
I have heard that gold one is very popular between gypsies.

It's part of the roll out that you have to sell out... We in one if the top stores got 20sn only black... So it was set from the start to have it this build a hype... I don't hate them congrats for the records congrats you will once again beat this record with 5.2 iPhone 6 comes out next year making three models... I just don't like them that's all

True, Apple knows how to market. Adding Gold colour was the key. and instead of keeping old iphone5, making "New" but adding colours and saying its cheap when its exactly same price. well its like running in loop. and apple fans get caught in it.
sorry apple fan, you play with fire, you will get burned.
apple making money and rippling people off with same old thing.

9 million iFans are responsible for the 700 million iOS devices PA reported last week. Let the iFans have their day, this was nearly all of them lining up for another version of the same phone and iPad they already own for like the 7th time

I'm more curious about the China/rest of the world sales ratio. That's where so many gold models went, after all. The announcement was probably worded to drum up the stock price (plus they're both "new" models anyhow). What was the i5 vs 4S split last year? Curious.
121. Mr.Verizon (Posts: 23; Member since: 12 Feb 2012)
Whats surprising about 9 million? They release a phone once a year ( in this case 2). Its a compounding number that is SUPPOSED to get bigger as their customer base grows (even a little bit) and now that all carriers get at same time every body can sync upgrades every 2 years for new one. impressive? Sort of but its to be expected at this point people. It would be surprising if apple wasnt only maker of iOS devices. Maybe this will bump their global smartphone market share up a few % from its current 13%. Though I have to knock the fingerprint scanner than phones a few years ago used. Yes the prob did it better than Motorola but its still not innovative like they say

But but but..that fandroid guy said that it'll not sell well and that Apple is dead. Did he lie....again???
9M is freaking awesome number and only accomplished in 3 days. Higher than some android/MS manufacturers sold...combined!
13. Whateverman (Posts: 3205; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Now you're just making stuff up. Everyone knows the iphone's will sell well and break all kinds of records. Some people just don't understand why, and yes I am one of them. But if the iphone does it for them, great for them.
22. darkkjedii (Posts: 11452; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
WM whatup bro? I was kinda shocked at 9Mil, I was thinking more like 6, due to the gold shortage.
27. Whateverman (Posts: 3205; Member since: 17 May 2009)
What's up newlywed, lol! I think a black and gold would have been a killer to! That's one tend (gold color) I hope other oems copy.
35. darkkjedii (Posts: 11452; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Yep lol, finally bro...married man. As a steelers fan I'd have loved that color option too, maybe next year. Steelers are horrible this year too lol.
70. Googler (Posts: 813; Member since: 10 Jun 2013)
For me, no surprises. Every year shows an increase, it makes sense.
Did they ever post how many units they said they were short for supply reasons? I'm guessing they weren't shorted as much as the articles made out.
105. darkkjedii (Posts: 11452; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
I think the main shortage was the gold ones goog.
28. rallyguy (Posts: 550; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
I'm with you on this one. More power to Apple. Obviously their marketing team does well. At the same time people complain that the iphone is pretty much the same year after year. But why change it if your making billions on the same old thing. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Apple sets a new record due to fandroids blessings.
3. bittertruth247 (Posts: 31; Member since: 03 May 2013)
Did Apple also report that over 35% of people who updated to the I07 system over the weekend had their phones lock up and delete contacts and music? I had at least 6 people come into my store this weekend wondering why their Iphones wouldn't come back on? Since I'm an android lover, I told them to contact their service provider about it because it's not our responsibility to troubleshoot Apple updates!
5. Ninetysix (Posts: 1614; Member since: 08 Oct 2012)
Restoring from backup will restore all of those.
12. promise7 (Posts: 424; Member since: 03 Jul 2013)
So because your a Android lover you wouldn't help your customers? I'd hate to shop in your store. As a retailer, your first priority should be the customer and not high school antics of taking sides.
30. rallyguy (Posts: 550; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
I wouldn't install an update right after it's released no matter what system it is. Bugs have to be worked out. I'm surprised actually after the last iOS update was a disaster. But I do understand why people want the latest and greatest. I guess if your going to wait in line over night for a phone, then you will update your current phone as well.
49. msa1988 (Posts: 417; Member since: 30 Mar 2010)
We should find out where you work, report you and get you fired. That's like working at a restaurant and only working with customers who order burgers, because everyone that orders wraps is an idiot. Man, what is wrong with you? Your job is to help the customers that walk through the door, not pick sides and whine like a middle-schooler when you don't agree with their preference. You should be ashamed of yourself.
7. AChackes (Posts: 11; Member since: 29 Oct 2012)
6 million to 3 million is 2:1 ratio. Should be 6.75 million 5s's and 2.25 million 5c's. #math
14. TylerGrunter (Posts: 922; Member since: 16 Feb 2012)
I was going to post exactly that. You saved me the time, thanks.
9. bittertruth247 (Posts: 31; Member since: 03 May 2013)
Restoring from backup is not the point, the point is that they rushed an non-impressive os for an outdated, mediocre device that people are still naively buying yet android, the world's largest and best os, never has that many people's phones lock up at the same time like Apple does every year! Not impressed at all! I wish I could go back in a time machine and erase the very day my store brough Apple products into our company 6 years ago, worse mistake we ever made!! Thank goodness we have a relevant product in our stores like Samsung!
11. Ninetysix (Posts: 1614; Member since: 08 Oct 2012)
Android doesn't get updates. What's your point?

For a person who praises apple and downs android you sure do use it. Or did you just buy an s4 to make your arguments look legit because you're using both OSes? LMAO if that's not self gratification then i don't know what is. You just proved to me your a hypocrite! By showing you actually have an s4 you just mad my day! ENJOY YOUR LAG YOU BASH APPLEDROID!

Funny, I could've sworn I've gotten a few...but I guess it must just be my absolute blind loyalism to a piece of software. Btw, that was sarcasm if you didn't get it.
It's funny everyone here talks like the other camp is so blindly loyal, when they are guilty of the same thing. Like your earlier post that no one will EVER beat that sales number. Everyone also believed the world was flat, how'd that work out. I expected the iphone to sell as it has, it works for some people, just not me.
On a side note, I notice you like to throw around the word fandroid quite a bit. Tell me, did PA's little popular appear and mention you could be banned for using that wording? Thought not. Hypocritical much PA? Just so you know, I'm not saying anyone should use inciteful language against Apple, Android, WP, race, creed, or orientation. But if PA wants to at least appear non biased, it should apply to and protect everyone, not just groups they pick and choose. That is, by definition, discrimination.
124. VZWuser76 (Posts: 1449; Member since: 04 Mar 2010)
Because the hypocrisy here could choke a mule. Everyone wants to ridicule others for what they choose, but god forbid someone do the same to them. I just don't see what stake they have in making sure their respective OS/ OEM becomes the king. More than likely insecure about their decision and want to feel validated. Usually I only reply if I believe someone is posting incorrect info. But it seems anymore that an intelligent conversation is impossible, and what's left is name calling and "Mike's better than yours". I miss when people could actually just talk about the devices without all the fanboys BS. Sure it was their before, but not to the extent it is now.

Yea, they've really skewed it this time to fool the non-analytical, but hey, that's an accomplishment in itself. To say they are covering a larger market is stupid, there is no new iPhone 5c just a shafted 5. They added China and a couple of other markets on release so 6 million 5s's sold on release which is a pretty sad hike from the over 5 million they sold of the iPhone 5. They included the 5c numbers in the mix to confuse people, but only idiots will fall for that. So the sales on release are fairly flat (although the 4s sold a little above 4 million on its release weekend showing that growth has largely settled on the whole for iPhones) and the pre-order numbers haven't been posted yet. Last year there were 2 million pre-orders for the 5, so lets see the numbers for the 5s (which might be disappointing since they have not been released yet and usually are by now). Seeing as how China and a bunch of other markets were added for release this year, it is kind of bad, but lets see if anyone picks up on that.
Overall, this holiday quarter Apple has lined up all its ducks for the worst spinning of sales data yet by the company. They have already begun by releasing todays news of 9 million of 2 iPhone models selling (remembering that the iPhone 5c is "new" and not a shafted rehash of last year's model). You will have all their major products revealed in the quarter (instead of the iPad being in spring) and then sales numbers will be likely as high as they ever get leading to most Apple tech commentators feeling all warm in their pants. Yet the following year's sales will determine how well Apple is actually doing. Of course there is always next year for iPhone fans (which is the going theme for them since 3 years ago).
