At I/O 2018, Google announced that a Material design overhaul will be coming to Google Maps in the months following the conference. Last week, a new "For You" tab rolled out for some Google Maps users, but that was about it til now.

According to Android Police, the full Material design update is now rolling out for more people running Google Maps 9.80.2, but it may also show up in older versions as well, as is the case with server-side updates.

As with the other Material makeovers that Google's been giving its apps, this one also comes with a lot of solid white UI elements, rounded corners, and the new Product Sans font. Functional changes include a completely revamped "Explore" screen with a scrollable carousel displaying notable venues and attractions nearby. The list also shows upcoming events in your area, which is not a new feature, but the events list has been updated with the option to filter them by time and rating. Tapping on the "More" icon in "Explore" presents you with a more involved list of categories including food, things to do, shopping, and services.

This seems to be a server-side update that is now going live for many people running Google Maps 9.80.2, but should also come to older versions of the app in the coming days.
