ESPN's 9th annual 'Body issue' cover was shot on Apple iPhone 7 Plus

ESPN magazine's annual 'Body issue' shows how certain athletes look unclothed. Poses are struck that cover certain areas of the body that are usually not seen in this publication. Ten different athletes posed for nine separate covers. At least one of the covers was photographed using the camera on the Apple iPhone 7 Plus. The cover that showed Chicago Cubs' second baseman Javier Baez featured an ad from Apple on the back. It showed the same exact photo of Baez used on the cover, but displayed on the handset without the ESPN graphics. The tag line reads, "Cover shot on iPhone 7 Plus."
It isn't clear if the other covers were also photographed with the dual camera setup on the iPhone 7 Plus. Images of the Baez photo shoot revealed the use of several iPhone 7 Plus units for the cover along with standard photography equipment. Other athletes found on alternate covers included New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike, Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas, San Jose Sharks players Brent Burns and Joe Thornton, mixed martial artist Michelle Waterson, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki and mountain climber Kirstie Ennis. Videos taken of the cover shoots for Edelman, Wozniacki and Ennis showed only professional photographic equipment in the background.
The ad calls to mind the 'Shot on iPhone' promotional billboards and commercials that Apple has used in the past to show the quality of the pictures that can be obtained using the rear-facing camera on the iPhone. The ad on the back cover also notes in fine print that the Baez picture was edited using a Mac, and a video of the shoot shows an iPhone 7 Plus hooked up to a Mac. You can go behind the scenes of the photo session by clicking on the video at the top of this story.

Apple obviously paid for it but it’s a pretty good shot.

Because it has been heavily edited. They even state it on some of their ads now, but not all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Marques has a cool video on these shot on an iPhone ads. In short... yeah they are shot with an iPhone but with a lot of professional equipment to go with it (not to mention photo/video editing). https://youtu.be/OkPter7MC1I

Cool, they used an iPhone to take a picture... But did they use the editing software on the iPhone to or did they opt to use pro software on a computer or laptop for the final product?

Most likely used a pro software on a PC to edit and enhance the shot.

pretty sure they aren't.. you can get PC with much power processing power compared to iMac at the same price.. and check octane bench, all highscores are from PC.. (kinda obvious since iMac didn't have 8x1080Ti or 7xTitanX)

But you don't need those video cards for video/photo editing. It's a well-known fact that designers and photographers prefer OSX. Especially since a few very good editors are available on OSX only. There is more to working with a computer than raw performance in the CPU/GPU deparment. They want a screen that is very well calibrated and an OS that handles higher resolutions, especially on multiple screens, very well. And while I don't use OSX, it is a lot better at scaling than Windows. Especially on more than one screen.
