HTC Desire Eye preliminary benchmark results show this smartphone isn't just for selfies

The freshly introduced HTC Desire Eye is focused on fantastic selfies, not wild gaming performance. This doesn't mean that HTC's latest smartphone isn't a powerhouse that can get into a fight with most of this year's flagships and hold its own against everyone but the monstrously tricked-out Samsung Galaxy Note 4

A pair of 13MP cameras and attractive design aside, HTC gifted its latest Desire phone with almost the same internals that power the HTC One (M8) - namely, a bigger 5.2-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a slightly smaller 2400mAh battery. A flagship level of performance is to be expected of this configuration, thus it comes as no surprise that the Desire Eye performed superbly in our preliminary benchmarks. For example, the selfie-centric smartphone scored better than the Samsung Galaxy S5 in Geekbench 3. The AnTuTu result is a tad disappointing, but it can be explained by the phone running a possibly unfinished software build.

We've put the preliminary benchmark results in the gallery below for your viewing pleasure. Once we obtain a finished retail unit, we'll know for sure what the HTC Desire Eye is really made of.

I wonder if Desire Eye's 13mp back Camera is crappy like One E8's or excellent like Butterfly 2's!

This is an awesome device. who cares If if it has an snapdragon 801 processor. HTC never said this is the phone of the year or best flagship. I Think HTC has come out with an awesome niche centric device which keeps things fresh while the big boys finish on the M9

I was hoping for a Windows Phone variant. I guess HTC want THAT serious about WP after all.

You don't need any freaking benchmark to see that it's a performer. It has a freaking Snap801 just like the One M8.

13MP and always on face tracking for up to four people on the front camera. This is an NSA wet dream.
