G1 to be offered in non-3G areas too
So who cares that T-Mobile’s 3G network is not as widespread as the other big three in the United States. It’s got built in Wi-Fi, so why doesn’t my local store not carry it at all? Well as of today, T-Mobile will start selling the G1 in retail outlets even if they’re not situated in an area where 3G is not present. When the device rolled out during October, it was only sold in areas where T-Mobile recently launched their 3G service. Although their 3G network may not be as available as others, the phone can always revert to the slower EDGE connection. Slowly but surely, we’re pretty confident that T-Mobile will expand its footprint within the year. Consumers can now travel to their local retailer instead to purchase the device instead of having to drive miles to a store that is covered under their 3G network.
