Before landing in the US, Sony Xperia Z2 should be launched in Canada (pre-orders available now)
Last month, Sony announced that it would release its new Xperia Z2 in Canada starting May, exclusively via Bell Mobility. And yet it turns out that Canadian customers will be able to buy the Z2 unlocked as well.

According to the Xperia Z2 product page found at Sony Canada’s website, the smartphone is now available for pre-order in stores, costing $699.99. While Sony doesn’t say when the unlocked Z2 will be in stock in Canada, we assume it’s going to happen later this month. Meanwhile, Bell is also accepting pre-orders for the Z2, asking $179.95 for it on contract, or $699.95 without contract.

All in all, Canadian users will have the Xperia Z2 before folks in the US - where the new Sony flagship smartphone should arrive, unlocked, sometime “this summer.” Verizon might sell the Z2, too, although this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

The Xperia Z2 runs Android 4.4 KitKat, is waterproof (IP58), and features - among other things - a 5.2-inch 1080p display, a 20.7MP rear camera, 3GB of RAM, and a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor.

This is such a lame launch by Sony. And the $699 price is a joke. Great phone being ruined by an incompetent company.

The price is standard for flagships on Bell right now. Both the M8 and the S5 have the same off contract price. The Z2 actually has a cheaper on contract price than those two, as they both go for $229 off contract.

The price isn't out of line, compared to other newly released flagships.

But yeah, pretty lame release. Tease all you want, but you shouldn't "release" a phone unless you're ready to ship millions of units world-wide, or are 100% certain of an announced date.

It is priced within the same price range of the S5 and M8. But yeah, too bad that phone didn't make it to the US in April.

Other than the water resistance, I just can't see any reason to spend $700 on this 16GB Sony Z2 vs. $350 on a 64GB OnePlus One. The Sony isn't even real FHD because of the onscreen buttons.

And the phone that would have been a good "full spec + smaller size" Android alternative to an iPhone -- the Z2 Compact -- is nowhere to be found. Sad.

You forgot the micro SD card slot. Yes, I know the 64GB on the OnePlus One is a lot of space there, but some people prefer the phone to have micro SD card slot because you can transfer files like music, videos, pictures to another device easily which the Xperia Z2 has but the OnePlus One don't.

Also, some people prefer a trusted brand name like Sony than a new brand OnePlus.

...and about the FHD, it doesn't matter if it has onscreen or capacitive buttons, it's still FHD, it's just that onscreen buttons just take a bit of the screen space. That's all.

Why don't you tell that to HTC, Apple, LG, Samsung, etc?

Btw, It's 100% real FHD when you're watching movies and pictures.

HTC already started to include micro SD card slot on their phones, LG include it on most of their phones (don't know why the G2 don't have it though, but the G Pro 2 and other new ones have it), Samsung include it on all of their phones. And yeah, Apple should learn from them.

The onscreen buttons will be hidden when you're watching movies and pictures unless you tap on the screen again. This is Android, the common feature of Android, the beauty of Android.

Yo Xperia, I was replying to 0xFFFF about the 1+1 price and FHD thing. But looks like I hit the wrong button.

With 4.4, there are definite advantages to having more built-in storage rather than a bit plus a microSD slot. It depends on what you need your phone for. If you want a bunch of graphically-intense games, more internal storage is better, because with 4.4 you might not be able to move them to SD storage. If it's music/video/images, then a microSD slot might be better.

Of course, with root, everything is different.

I also consider a micro SD card slot to be a plus, especially when a phone doesn't make me remove the back cover to access it. To me, the price of the Sony is just too high, especially if one adds the cost of a 32GB or 64GB micro SD memory card.

And if the ATT/VZW models of the Sony come with a locked bootloader as they likely will, that makes the phone, I will not buy it, no matter what.

To be sure, there are reasons to get the Sony. Putting side the bootloader for the moment, if I took the phone outdoors or risked getting it wet a lot, I would probably buy the Z2. It's not a bad phone :)

As I don't risk my phones with the weather very often, and with the rate of change in the Android world, for me, I just don't see the value in spending double the money or more to get the Sony (for essentially the same specs as the OnePlus One), especially when 2015 is going to be the year of wide scale 64-bit Android availability.

Why the heck did you have to mention US in the title - few more clicks, eh? Doesn't Sony ALWAYS release their phones in Canada earlier than the US? Let me help you out with some tips since you're having problems finding news. Sony JUST started to take pre-order (that's right - pre-order) for Xperia Z1 LTE (unlocked) here in the US. Now you can put 2 & 2 together and make another post saying Z2 is certainly not coming to the US in the near future. Thank God for eBay and 7/11!

Sony doesn't release phones in the US unless they are out of date and obsolete, like the Z1S.

First of all, the Xperia Z2 may be released in the US because there's a Z2 spotted with a Verizon logo on it.

Second, we're talking about the Z2 here, not Z1. The Z1 is already available in the US which is the Z1S for T Mobile, I'm not sure about the unlocked Z1 though.

Lastly, go take a chill pill mkay?

Firstly, you need the pill for yourself. All I said was Canada always gets Sony phones before the US and it's not even worth a post. How hard was that to get?

The Verizon Z2 picture wasn't legit.

www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z2_for_verizon_gets_accidentally_confirmed-news-8425.php

"Available" is a subjective term. The Z1 Compact isn't "available" in the US, yet through eBay, Amazon, Swappa, or other way, it's easily available (and not unresonably priced) and works on GSM networks.

Who spends time on the internet because they want to take a chill pill? :)

Seriously, Sony is seriously screwed up when it comes to the US market. I think there's a lot of people -- potential customers -- who are frustrated with Sony. In the past, I actually emailed them about buying a Z1 Compact, and they never got back to me. The Z2 isn't very interesting to me, but the Z2 Compact or Z3 Compact would be.

Dude, the gatekeepers in the US are the networks so Sony does not really have much of a say in this matter. If the networks demand the phone, then no doubt Sony will happily oblige. Seriously, do you think a manufacturer knowingly ignores an opportunity to make profit? Well, UK based and been enjoying, correction, loving my Z2 for a couple of weeks. Had the S5 (sold today to CEX) and the build quality is just sub premium by comparison. Sony also pulled a neat trick as the Z2 somehow feels smaller than the Z1 by making it thinner and slightly narrower!

In Indonesia, the preorder price is around IDR8500K (USD739.5)... _(:3」∠)_
I hope the G3 will be less expensive than that...
