featured 7 rumored smartphones and tablets that sounded awesome, but never made it to the market

With speculation and rumors coming out of our ears, it shouldn't be surprising that not all of them end up holding water. In fact, while insider intel is definitely becoming more and more common, so are false rumors on the rise. But it's not always lies — sometimes, manufacturers just end up axing a project for one reason or another. Sometimes...

Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition now available

For all of last year, those running the AnTuTu benchmark test on their Android handset had to see the Meizu MX4 teasing them with the top listing. Now, a version of the flagship handset with the Ubuntu Touch OS is available. The gesture based Ubuntu does not use any buttons below the screen. Shades coming down from top to bottom show notifications and settings, while from the bottom up it shows the application menu...

Vsenn modular phones may allow Firefox or Ubuntu, not just Android

When you think of a customizable smartphone, you might think of a modular device like Google's Project Ara or its new competitor Vsenn, which allows you to easily upgrade hardware components; or, you might think of the software side of customization, like CyanogenMod, and alternative Android launchers. Rarely does the option to choose your own OS come up, but Vsenn wants that to be part of the conversation...

Meizu MX4 Pro with Alibaba's own YunOS on board leaks, might get unveiled on October 20 and cost roughly $293

Although the Meizu MX4 is already out in select markets and the device is, by all means, a powerhouse of its own, the manufacturer behind has surely not settled for the time being. Rumor has it that Meizu has at least one additional version of the MX4 in the pipeline - the MX4 Pro. What we know so far about the latter is pretty compelling - Quad HD display, octa-core Samsung Exynos chipset, 3GB of RAM, probably a fingerprint scanner, 20MP rear camera/13MP front-facing camera (you might have some competition soon, HTC Desire EYE!), and the mythical Ubuntu Touch powering the handset...

Ubuntu Touch-powered Meizu MX4 Pro caught in the wild

Seed concept allows for a smartphone to power other devices including a tablet, laptop and desktop

Seed is similar concept to the Asus Padfone. A smartphone is placed into a dock to power up a tablet. In a nutshell, that is how you would explain the Padfone. Seed was devised by a computer engineering student from the University of Cape Town named Nick Rout. And unlike the Android powered Padfone, Seed will be driven by Ubuntu. Rout has fronted the cost of Seed out of his own pocket, although he expects crowd-sourced funding to be in the product's future...

featured Ubuntu phones to sell for $200 to $400, is this the right strategy?

Ubuntu convergence shown with the same app running on a phone, tablet, and PC

One of the most compelling visions for the future of computing is in the idea of convergence - the idea that there should be one operating system that spans all devices. Some companies are taking a slow road to convergence (Microsoft/Google), and some companies don't believe that this is the way forward (Apple). Canonical is the one company going all out on convergence with Ubuntu, and we're starting to see exactly how that will work...

poll Which emerging mobile OS is most likely to succeed?

While smartphone manufacturers are popping left and right nowadays, the same can't quite be said about the software running our pocket tech. As with the PC space, creating an operating system is an extremely laborious process, one that offers slim odds of success. Even today, our trusty computers are mostly limited to a choice between Windows and Mac, with Linux still being the strict domain of power users and beyond. The situation is not that much different in the smartphone world right now -- Android is dominating, while iOS has got its committed following and its second place. Windows Phone 8...

Major carriers may not offer Ubuntu Touch until 2015

Canonical is on a mission to manage expectations right now. We know that Ubuntu Touch phones are expected to start hitting the market in the spring, but Canonical wants to be clear that while there may be some high-powered options on the market, we shouldn't be expecting devices to be released on major carriers right away, and maybe not at all until 2015...

Ubuntu Touch drops Nexus 7 and 10 support, won't add Nexus 5 support yet

So far in its development, Ubuntu Touch has been focused on Nexus devices. Canonical has officially supported the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, 7, and 10, and has let the Ubuntu Community handle building support for other devices (and the community has added support for approximately 50 devices). When the Nexus 5 came out, we expected to hear that added to the list, but now it seems Canonical will not be officially supporting Google's latest handset...
