Call Quality

Call quality is slightly above the average for both handsets. The Xperia Z2 has an unnatural metallic rumble to voices in the earpiece, with audible annoying side noise, with slightly better output from the mics. The G2 on the other hand has issues in reverse - its mic sounds unclear to callers, while the earpiece is fine.

Battery

Both the Xperia Z2 and G2 come with large, long lasting batteries, but the 3200mAh battery on the Z2 is one step above the LG handset. In fact, the Z2 scored so well in our battery test that it ranks among the longest lasting phones out there with battery longevity of 8 hours and 10 minutes, while the G2 scores 6 hours and 48 minutes.

The juicer on both is sealed and there’s no way to swap batteries on the go. The two also have energy conservation modes to get the most juice out of the battery when it starts getting low. In Sony’s case, it is called Stamina mode, while on the LG phone it’s ‘Battery saver’. Both do things like switch off mobile data and even put brakes on the processor to work in a more battery-efficient (and slower) way, but neither is as radical as the Ultra Power Saving Mode on the Galaxy S5.

We measure battery life by running a custom web-script, designed to replicate the power consumption of typical real-life usage. All devices that go through the test have their displays set at 200-nit brightness.

hours Higher is better
Sony Xperia Z2
8h 10 min (Excellent)
LG G2
6h 48 min (Average)

Conclusion

The Xperia Z2 feels like the superior device in this battle of the 5.2-inch Android flagship phones. It’s got a sleek style to both its outwards appearance and software, a great overall performance, great camera and a super long lasting battery. The LG G2 is also a great performer that does not lack much in processing power, but its design feels less refined and the camera is a bit less capable.

However, when it boils down to value-for-the-money, the LG G2 has got price on its side, as it can be found for an off-contract price of $400 (€350), while the Xperia Z2 can be had for a much heftier price north of $600 (€600). So do we have a winner in this Android battle of giants? If price is not a concern, the Xperia Z2 has got a clear advantage, but if you don’t want to pay the full cost of a new flagship, the G2 is one of the best value-for-the-money offers that still pack flagship-like specs.

I can't believe I'm going to defend an LG device, but... Did we read the same article? Sure, the Z2 has the benefit of being the newer device, but "owned"? If anything the Z2 looks like it comes out short considering the tech it advantage it should have, but doesn't quite capitalize on.

G2 is still a great phone at its price! ONE OF THE BEST CAMERAPHONE, GREAT BATTERY AND GREAT SPECS AND PERFORMANCE! Z2 will not win against G3!

also the G2 is older than the z2 and i'm sure the G3 will crush the z2 in many aspects

Z2 for sure, We must wait for G3 which can be the most powerful competitor to the best smart phone of the date, AKA Z2.

Z2 the best smartphone of the date? except the design wich is nice but the phone is to heavy and bulky and thick bezels (not to speak about the ugly so last decade icons like in the old Sony Ericsson K500i), it doesn't beat the S5 at nothing. So the best smartphone title is a little bit forced. My rankings are: Htc M8 - the best looking and speakers S5 - the most powerful (camera, processor, sensors, IPXX certification, software except a little bit lagy Touchwiz) G2 - best value-for-the-money

My Z2 rocks but I kinda miss my Note 3. Even with dating specs, I still think that it's the best smartphone money can buy right now.

I can test it more later today when I go play badminton. But it's supposed to calculate your steps, calories, how much walking, running or cycling you have done. Also it tells you how much you have listened to music or using social media. But the feature I'm the most interested in is the sleep time calculation and "smart wake up" lol. It should vibrate on your wrist and thus wake you up. I hate the sound of an alarm clock so I'll be really waiting for my wake up tomorrow!

Too excited for the Z2 vs. G3 comparison. A true clash of the underdog titans.

The G2 wins because the Z2 is ridiculous large while the G2 isn't.

you can get a g2 on swappa for less than $300. z2 is a great phone, unfortunately their software is even uglier than touchwiz and the phone is hideous, imo. also, not that it makes much of a difference, but why is the g2 still on 4.2.2?

Amazing... cpu gets hot on z2, throttling lowers the CPU, lower scores, lower porformance on apps and games, and you are telling me Z2 is better? it costs twice as the G2! Paid Versus?

Big deal if it gets hot. I've got my Z2 yesterday and I've already Rooted it to 2.7Ghz and a raise in Gpu up by 150mhz My Z2 gets even hotter reaching 47+celcuis. I'm not complaining What do you have baby hands that you must touch that section where Cpu Gpu gets hot. Why touch that section You must be. A female might I assume

Its amazing how mobile phone camera is evolving, I mean last year G2 was in the top in android devices and in this comparison the Z2 just beats the G2. I like this competition, which eventually will end up in a near DSLR like capabilities and imaging..!

G2 is the best smartphone "BRANDED " for its price tag! G3 is the next KING!

I just cannot believe the appreciation of beauty of this website. The appearance of G2 just looks fancier from everywhere than the Z2. At least it doesn't look like old or something.

As I see, no matter the Z2 or GS5, their cameras are just a little bit better than that of G2.
