Sony Xperia T3 Review

Call quality

An earpiece with a hissy attitude, and two great noise-canceling mics form the call quality on the T3.

The earpiece of the Xperia T3 is nothing to write home about, as its strength and quality are rather average. At the highest volume the eapriece develops a hissy attitude, and sounds rather hollow otherwise, unless you check the ClearPhase sound intensity setting in the menus, at which point the echo effect is gone, but the voices sound rather artificial.

The two noise-canceling microphones, on the other hand, perform really well at weeding the background noise, and relaying our voice loud and clear to the other side.

Sony does it again! The Xperia T3 joins our elite 8+ hours club of screen-on time, and is currently in the top 10 in our battery life rankings.

True to its year-long midrange tradition, Sony managed to put a frugal display panel in the Xperia T3, and optimize the hardware for a pretty great battery life. Sony cites close to 15 hours of talk time and nearly a month on standby from the 2500 mAh juicer. We ran the T3 through our own battery benchmark, and the phone managed the whopping 8 hours and 23 minutes, putting it in our top 10 ranking, and cementing Sony's position as the brand-name maker that offers the best battery life on its handsets as a whole. If that isn't enough, whenever you're low on charge you can activate Sony's STAMINA mode, which essentially disables data/Wi-Fi when the screen is off, further helping you conserving battery.

We measure battery life by running a custom web-script, designed to replicate the power consumption of typical real-life usage. All devices that go through the test have their displays set at 200-nit brightness.

hours Higher is better
Sony Xperia T3
8h 23 min (Excellent)
6h 48 min (Average)
Samsung Galaxy S4
4h 59 min (Poor)
Sony Xperia Z2
8h 10 min (Excellent)

minutes Lower is better
Sony Xperia T3
Sony Xperia Z2

Sony has made a well-rounded midranger that shines in terms of design, and performs adequately in most departments. Granted, its screen seems a bit too reflective outdoors, and the earpiece is not up to snuff, but the Xperia T3 offers an ultrathin chassis that is comfortable to hold, and an excellent battery life.

The catwalk star goes for about $400 in the States, or EUR 300 in Europe, which, granted, is a midrange price, and yet would make you pause if you compare it with the competition. For that kind of money you can now get the 32 GB G2, LG's 5.2” flagship from last year, which beats the T3 in almost every aspect, save for the thin design, and the battery life. Samsung's Galaxy S4 is a formidable competitor as well, since it comes with superior specs for the same price. It has a smaller, 5” display, but is way more compact than the T3. You can also take a long, hard look at the Chinese brands, churning phones like Huawei Honor 6, which can be grabbed from Amazon, or Xiaomi Mi4, which is available on Newegg, for instance. Granted, these brands are fairly obscure in the US, but will offer you truly flagship specs, like 5” 1080p displays, Snapdragon 801 procesors, and 13 MP cameras, for the same, or a bit higher tag than what Sony asks for the T3. Don't get us wrong, though – with its thin, yet sturdy chassis, and excellent battery life, the Sony Xperia T3 is still a great midranger – we'd just advise you to wait for the inevitable price drop, so you can save on the buyer's remorse when you compare it with last year's flagships.

  • Excellent battery life
  • Very slim, comfortable to hold design
  • Decent picture and video quality

  • The display is hard to tell outdoors
  • Hissy earpiece

Nope, for the price it got what it deserve. If this phone costs $300 i'm pretty sure it will get at least 8.2.

"About the only gripe we have with the design, are the all-too-thick bezels, which make this 5.3” handset larger than the 5.5” LG G3, for instance." Hmm.. When PA reviews the iphone 6 & i am sure that it will at some point, I will lookout for a statement that us along the lines of this.. "About the only gripe we have with the design, are the all-too-thick bezels, which make this 5.5” handset larger than the 5.7” Note 4, for instance." I will then accept that PA's reviews & opinions are fair & straightforward.

So far the review mention quite a few good things like long battery life. Has the brightest screen compared to other flag ship some costing more. Not many people use the bundle ear piece and a mid end is expect to have an average screen quality so very strange score. Sony might want to consider not sending their phone to PA to review AT ALL.

The score doesn't make any sense all that good talk about pictures, battery life, mic, screen etc u gave it 6.5 and why put it up against flagships, put it again other mid rangers and let see how if preform cuz I bet it's better than many other PA never have nothing good to say about no other products unless it's apple or Samsung

I have come to the conclusion that in my mind I need to add "2" to whatever Sony device being reviewed here on P.A.... so this device, would actually have a fair 8.5 rating.

Same story for Xperia M2 voice call performance. Phonearena said it was terrible, GSMarena said the exact opposite. I trust GSMA a bit more though. They seem to take longer, more in-depth reviews.

The Price tag of this phone should be the reason for the low score. But it should be put in the Cons list. I could not understand the pricing of Sony. My T2 ultra which has better specs than this T3 has less price than this T3.

Agree, PA is biased against Sony. Lets see if they say the same about the iPhone 6 bezels. As for the visual size comaprison, why use the S4 and not S5? Why use the G2 and not G3? The former flagships like S4 and G2 are one of the smallest 5in and 5.2in flagships ever so PA is deliberately trying to make the T3 look bad...And how can they compare a mid ranger to flagships? They should use the mid rangers like Galaxy Grand. Obvious bias !

It very expensive and Sony Service is patetic, for the expensive handsets you need a good service that sony is lagging, if you give it for service you will get back refurbished item, that means you are paying for new mobile but getting 2nd hand item
