Sony Xperia SP Review

Call quality:

We have nothing to complain about, folks! The Sony Xperia SP has an earpiece producing loud and clear voice tones, while the microphone transmits free of distortion sound on the other side of the line. And that, mind you, are results we got on a carrier that doesn't offer HD Voice calls – a feature that the Sony Xperia SP supports.

Battery life:

Battery life won't be an issue in case you use the Sony Xperia SP with moderation. Light users will most likely get 2 full days of usage without the need to recharge. The smartphone has a massive (for a mid-ranger) battery with a capacity of 2370mAh battery – enough to provide over 13 hours of 3G talk time or 7 hours and 30 minutes of continuous video playback on a single charge. The phone's battery life can be extended further by enabling Stamina mode, which disables data connectivity and other energy-draining features whenever they aren't needed. But keep in mind that the battery cell is not removable so it cannot be swapped on the go.

There is no such thing as a perfect smartphone, and the Sony Xperia SP won't be the one to break that rule. However, looking at its pros and cons after testing it extensively, we can confidently conclude that its a mid-range smartphone worthy of attention. It is a capable multimedia device suitable for those who want the benefits associated with high-end devices – the large, high-resolution screen and fast processor, to name a few, but in a mid-range package that doesn't cost as much as a flagship handset. Plus, you get LTE connectivity as an added bonus.

But keep in mind that the Sony Xperia SP doesn't really have that great of a camera, as much as Sony's marketing department want to convince you otherwise. An alternative that may cost about the same, depending on where in the world you live, yet takes much better photos, is the Samsung Galaxy S III. Or in case the large screen is your top priority, but your budget is rather tight, check out the LG Optimus 4X HD and its 4.7-inch IPS LCD display.

Sony Xperia SP Video Review:

  • Handles 3D games flawlessly
  • Great call quality
  • Rich in multimedia features
  • Decent battery life

  • Not the best 8MP camera we've ever seen

It was a good review, but, 8/10? ... .__. I really like this phone, my next phone will either be this, or the Xperia ZL.

Check out the ZR. It's a higher end version of the SP. Same 4.6" screen but iwht a quad core processor, 2GB of ram, 13mp camera and water/dust resistance.

I didn't know about that one, I will have to check it when it's announced. I just hope it is a compact phone, since that's why the ZL seems so appealing to me. I really like the SP since it keeps the transparent bar from my previous Xperia P.

I'm not sold on the light bar as it seems to add a bit of size. It looks great though. I'm hoping the image on that page is what the ZR looks like after all. Would love the compact size and upgrade it specs.

The ZR does look nice with the screen taking the overall front space, but i don't think it'll come cheap. This here, the SP, i'm falling in love...i'm really interested with this one. The pros out-weigh the cons. Agreed that the camera isn't the best out there but it gets the job done...for the blurred, over-saturated, washed etc pictures, i have photoshop, so no worries. Besides that, i'm all for this phone...the screen size is just perfect for me.

this phone is complete garbage. The wifi signal drops constantly even when within 5 feet of the wifi router. I would rather cut my own throat than own another of these POS's. Free would be thousands too expensive.

How is giving this phone an 8 miserly? This phone is sporting specs and performance of a late-2012 flagship that would've received ~8.5. It's the middle of 2013, of course the score is going to drop a bit.

and an expensive ( literally same guts as s advance ) s3 mini gets 8.9, talk about super bias

c'mon PA! 2 points off just for the camera? the pros outweigh the cons, man.

And the numbers reflect this. If a 5 is average, then an 8 reflects a phone that is far more pro than con.

compared to other high end devices, maybe. But compared to other mid-range devices, this whitewashes them so i think it at least deserves a 8.5 or 9

I love the way the SP produces punchy colors but sometimes there are oversaturated ones. Image detail is only visible at zooming a photo but not a big deal. I guess this phone should have at least gets an 8.5-9.
