Screen comparison: G3 vs Xperia Z2 vs Galaxy S5 vs One (M8) vs iPhone 5s

With a new flagship handset out of the gate (we're looking at you, LG G3), it's time for us to sit down, power up the calibrators, get our magnifying glasses, and do a nice and detailed inspection of what we're dealing with when it comes to that gigantic, 5.5” display...

well, this has nothing do to with being an expert or not, but the measurements by Ray S. where simply incorrect because he was too incompetent to measure the actual color temperature of the S5 correctly. Ray S. and his fellow phonearene "journalists" were using retail display calibration software products that use a Color Difference measure called dE, which includes a Luminance (Brightness) Error component in addition to the Color Hue and Saturation (Chromaticity) Error component. Using the Color Difference dE is appropriate for setting the display calibration, but dE is Not a measure of Visual Color Accuracy (Hue and Saturation) because it also includes the Luminance (Brightness). The eye sees and interprets brightness and color as two separate visual issues - dE combines them together. So all conclusions based on using dE for Visual Color Accuracy are incorrect and that's why his measurements are simply inaccurate. now the problem is not the educated readers who are well aware of the fact that the phone arena reviews are bogus and heavily biased, but idiots like you who believe that reviews like this one are the real deal despite containing several inaccuracies...if Ray. S. came up with a color temperature of 12000 Kelvin you would still believe it and would gladly buy any phone promoted by phonearene and I don't need to tell you which phone this is, do I?

I still have yet to see anything that disproves the findings of DisplayMate stating that the S5 has the best screen available. It seems that most tech blogs follow the same line of thought, and my own anecdotal experience supports it. The screen on the S5 is the current one to beat.

Hey, Ray. Read what an actual expert in display tech said about your silly attempts to act like you know what you're taking about. Stop trying to disseminate your drivel in order to pump up the iPhone. https://mobile.twitter.com/DisplayMate/status/472099566763122688

thanks for posting this. I am glad that displaymate put in the time and effort to shed light on the bogus "review" (or should we rather say drivel) of Ray S. This Ray S. is a diehard Apple fanatic and should have no business writing business for an allegedly unbiased tech site. hell, i am beginning to think that this site is some sort of subsidiary of Apple inc. relentlessly promoting their own products.

Well no matter how many measurements are thrown around, the picture of the Siberian Tiger made the S5's screen look like crap and proved that it's far from color accurate. (At least in the default display mode)

This guy can post a list full of his so professional devices with their prices. I don't trust someone who cannot distinguish green from white.

Sammy is truly THE expert in cheating with numbers. This Dr Prof whoever seems not to understand how he's been cheated, cuz he is obssessed by the numbers his lovely machines are spitting out. Why so much green you may ask, the answer is simple. green doesn't affect wb, but luminance by far the most. And thus, the green diodes consume by far the least power at the same luminance. You may praise GS5's battery life as much as you want, you are cheated by Sammy.

Ray S must be the most popular writer on phonearena.com. His diehard love for the iPhone and apple devices is stuff of legends! Surely this must be the only article on the entire Internet that rates the iPhone screen best amongst current smart phone offerings.

I am glad to have the pleasure of quoting a real expert (Dr. Raymond Soneira of Displaymate) about Ray's bogus reviews below. If that's not enough of a reason to pull all the drivel ever posted on this site by Ray. S. then I don't know what else to say. It's really time that this clown gets kicked to the curb or perhaps make him a VP at Apple for shill marketing. Here we go: "Recently some reviewers have published articles contradicting my Absolute Color Accuracy Measurements for the Samsung Galaxy S5. For example, see this recent review in phone Arena. The problem is that these reviewers are not scientists or display experts, and are using canned display calibration software incorrectly in order to test a display, which produces incorrect results and bogus conclusions. Below is a brief semi-technical analysis... The Color Difference dE used by the Reviewers Incorrectly includes the Luminance: The reviewers are using retail display calibration software products that use a Color Difference measure called dE, which includes a Luminance (Brightness) Error component in addition to the Color Hue and Saturation (Chromaticity) Error component. So all conclusions based on using dE for Visual Color Accuracy are incorrect."

By turning off high temperature property in the LG G3 hidden menu, I can maintain the brightness output, despite over heating. Also, by disabling the LCD Screen refresh rate that LG have capped, I can increase touch response time and increase the FPS of the screen.

GO home PA ur drunk. Besides outdoor visibility the G3 destroyed all of these phones in the other categories. To say anything other than that is an outright fallacy. You should all get your eyes checked. You are obviously backtracking over the battery fiasco. You look really stupid right now.

Why doesn't phonearena post the full name of the reviewer? What/who is Ray S.? Seems a bit amateurish.

Talk about insecure Samsung fans, needing to trash the M8's camera in a discussion about screens and screens alone. That's just sad :(

It would've been interesting to put in the One (M7) as well! It has a higher ppi than thw M8 and I think the screen of this phone is exceptional. I'm happy with this device.

I just don't get, why nobody's mentioning Amoled's burn-in effect. The fact, that Samsung displays look good the first month, and are unusable after a half of a year. You can't use GPS on them, cause you will get burned controls to the screen after just one longer use. And no, this wasn't fixed with pentile matrix and it will happen to the S5 way much faster than to the older Galaxies, due to it's higher brightness. Just go to the youtube.com/watch?v=74XovNRL-tU (I can't post the whole link with the tripple w in it) and see what happens to the S4 after maybe one month, maybe less. I'd LOVE to get Samsung's phone, but I just can't withstand the fact the screen is so so so bad.

this looks innacurate. no way s5 display such a blueish tint picture.
