Samsung Galaxy S II Review

0. phoneArena posted on 03 May 2011, 11:24

Is it a worthy sequel to the Samsung Galaxy S, which was the Android phone to beat last year? After all, the green robot got equipped with the most powerful chipset and the most innovative screen technology at the time… will history repeat itself?...

This is a discussion for a review. To read the whole review, click here

@eingild...your right that is phonearena opinion...but dont you agree not just phonearena but any sites that review phones should not have any bias and not be blinded by there prefered phone of choice...which phonearena are so obviously...im no fanboy of any os..last phone was 5800, current phone iphone 4 and my next phone s2...i just wish phonearena would review with out the apple goggles, wether its the evo3d or htc sensation i dont care if it gets higher than s2 as long its reviewd professionaly and not like teenage apple fanboys!

This website should be renamed:

iPhoneArena.com

You guys need to pull your iHeads out of your iAsses.

If the iPhone got a 9.5/10, then this phone is an 11/10.

And the Atrix got a 9.5/10. That's not an iPhone. Stop crying.

i doubt they will be outdated when the iphone 5 comes out..you just have to look at the ipad 2 to see how the internal of the ip5 will be..1ghz dual core underclocked to 900 or 800 mhz...ip4 did not outdate android phone that came before it such as the galacy s or evo which were 1gz and when ip4 came out it was 1ghz underclocked to 800mhz...apple are who is trying to catch up to android spec wize and android is catching up to the polish of apples software if it already with the likes of s2

This is such a silly rating, as silly as the cons I'm reading here. First of all regarding the differentiated design.....funny how that doesn't come up with the Atrix. Guess it is way more differentiated. Also how come being super thin doesn't count as a design PLUS? Next time we'll let you think about an ergonomic diferentiated design that is that thin and has a 4.3 inch screen. And don't tell me about the Arc cause it's specs are behind + Arc is a lagfest....noone likes performance compromises due to design innovations...especially one who is looking for a highend smartphone.

And as for the rest of the cons, they are just impossibly funny to drop the rating this much. Its like testing a car and dropping its rate by 10% because its windshield could be dimmer and the break lights could flash more efficiently.

Well done phonearena! Another great review, another reason not to come back here.

hehe, it's 9 out of 10, I wouldn't call it too shabby, considering there are other dual-core phones out there before the SGS 2. when the iPhone got introduced last year, it had the highest resolution of any display out there, and glass shell design, so for the time, yeah, it was highly innovative. here we have an upgrade of a previous version - bigger and better screen, faster processor, etc... if Samsung outs a Super Amoled phone with that sweet 1280x800 resolution they are talking from the 5.5-Gen factory, then it definitely can score a 10... or 11 :-)

10/10 for Galaxy S II !! Phone Arena don't be ridiculous, you should give at least 9.5....

Two questions for PA reviewer Daniel:

The Techradar review reckons the 'WiFi is weak' but doesn't elaborate, can you publish a table of WiFi Bandwidth vs Distance ?

You explain the DLNA frame skipping on HD video as due to: "Most likely, if we were on a Wireless N connection, performance would be better" - as the phone has WiFi-N, are you saying your DLNA display doesn't ?

When a compatible HDMI cable becomes available, can you update your review to test HDMI Mirroring, and also, if the cable allows the SGS2 can be sumultaneously mains powered, even if the HDMI Monitor is (as 99.9% are) pre-MHL spec ?

A 9/10 is actually a very good rating considering how biased Iphonearena is. It's been no secret that phones manufactured by US companies (Apple Iphone, Motorala Atrix) generally fare much better than their Asian counterparts...

If the Galaxy S II had an apple logo slapped on it they would have surely rated it as 10/10. Seriously how can you possibly give a 9.5 to a phone that has serious antenna issues (death grip), sensor problems, a very confined OS (try exchanging files using bluetooth), an extremely strong dependence on Itunes, etc...On the other hand, the Atrix which its Pentile matrix display, got a 9.5 as well.

Whatever these guys are smoking, it must be some real good stuff!

Thanks for your reply saveferris but I strongly think you’re wasting your time and efforts discussing with this immature isheep rayjones.

Someone must be blatantly ignorant not to realize that Iphonearena’s review is seriously flawed and the "cons" listed for the S II absolutely pale in comparison to the weaknesses of the Iphone 4...

Unfortunately rayjones brings absolutely nothing to the table because he didn't refute any of my points.

We can gladly continue discussing with rayjones if he addresses the following Iphone 4 issues:

- Death grip issue which affects both AT&T (GSM) and Verizon (CDMA) models (after all we're talking about mobile phones and being able to make calls in clear quality should definitely be one of the most, if not the most important feature of a mobile phone!)

- Extremely constraint OS (you can't even connect an Iphone to a computer, let alone transfer files that doesn't have the crappy Itunes software installed)

- Lack of customization (you can't even populate the homescreen with widgets...)

- Lack of flash support (let’s face it, you can’t even access the standard youtube website and many websites including those of many fortune 500 companies stick to the flash technology to make their websites more visually appealing)

- Lack of support for social clients (with more and more people accessing social network sites on the go this is nowadays a must have feature)

This was just a short excerpt of all the features the Iphone 4 lacks.

I must confess that both countries the US (Apple, Motorala) and South Korea (Samsung, LG, etc.) have very capable and innovative companies that bring rapid advancements in the fields of mobile technology (and information technology in general) but let’s face it, if the Samsung II had the flaws of the Iphone 4 it would have gotten a 6 -7 rating.

The best part however is that this isheep rayjones comes up and accuses others of being immature while bringing absolutely no valid points to the table.

’m seriously asking you rayjones, are you out of your freaking mind?

Give me one simple reason why the Ihpone 4 deserves a higher rating and we can continue our discussion…

Immature iSheep. Says the person who compares a person to an animal simply for defending an Operating System that I simply have respect for. I am an avid Windows fan. I apologize if I can logically see that this is a fair rating and that PhoneArena clearly gave the Atrix (an Android phone) a 9.5. Says the person who is evidently upset over a .5 difference! Let's reevaluate. And if you wish to discuss the good things of the iPhone 4 then I shall say that the Retina display is great. Not better than SAMOLED in my opinion but great. The resolution is rivaled by only one other phone. The build quality is superb. The phone and OS is quite reliable and rarely freezes up. Listen, all the things you mentioned are subjective. Some people enjoy the benefits of the supposedly "closed" ecosystem because it works. I don't understand the ubiquitous anger of iPhone and rating the iPhone above another phone. I personally want the Omnia 7 and will be happy with such. If you wish to bicker over a .5 difference in a subjective phone rating, you cannot seriously sit here and make a whole judgment of character and call me immature.

Oh and just thought I'd mention that the Verizon iPhone received a 9/10 as this phone did. And the Atrix once again received a 9.5/10. So apparently, an Android device was rated over the iPhone. And this phone was SUBJECTIVELY equal to the iPhone. I actually favor this phone. I just don't like when people whine and complain about supposed bias as if they're mere children over something so minuscule as a subjective smartphone rating and dare to call themselves grown men and women; adults. Often times, sitting back and logically observing the phone, its specs, usability, and success gets rid of the bias claim. Don't we all have lives to live and work to do?

I've had this phone a week now and i'm really happy with my first Android handset. The only thing i'm a little miffed by is that i can't play Tegra 2 games although i can see this changing in the future as game developers won't be developing the same game for different chipsets - to expensive!

Great phone so far!!
