Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Review

Wait, what? Why Note 7 and not Note 6? Easy: This year, Samsung is willing to align its S and Note lines better, so it's missing the “Note 6” and jumping straight to calling it Note 7. But, if this is going to give you peace of mind, if we count the Note Edge, then the Note 7 is actually the seventh Note in the series, so the name is indeed fitting.

A little surprised by the score - everything I've seen and read about this device seemed to point to this being the BEST SMARTPHONE available right now.

That doesn't make it a 10 per se, but 8.7 doesn't seem accurate either.

No phone can be a 10. But this one is certainly a 9.

Thats because every other smartphone on the market in this class has been out for a year or sucks.

What's with the rating of the note series anyway. Every next Note is better than the predecessor but the overall score you PA give is going lower with the newer?!? Kind a nonsense in general... N7-8.7; N5-9; N4-9.3; Do you mean the phone is getting worst with each new release ... because it definitely not true overall!

Ray S gave a low score so that the upcoming iphone will not look so bad if iphone 7 is going to be worse than expected.

John V is no longer with us...if he did this review like the Note 5, this would have EASILY beaten the Note 5s score.I'd say a 9.3/9.4 score. You have to take that into account.

When everybody yells that this is the BEST SMARTPHONE of the year. Then this.....

8.7 is probably fair given that the S7 and S7 Edge (best on the market IMO) got a 9.0. Of course Samsung fans will cry foul since the Moto Zs got an 8.9... Bottom line - anything above an 8.5 is a great score. Try not to quibble over tenths of a point.

Actually, the point that surprises me as a samsung fan isn't that the moto Z beats it (everyone have their own preferences after all), but it's that the note5 beats it. The note 5 brought nothing revolutionary other than updated design language and controversial decisions. The note 7 brought back the sd card, increased battery, iris scanner, IP68, Input option while submerged (S-pen), USB type-C, HDR-compatible screen, and an edge screen (this may be a negative). I wouldn't mind if the note 7 was 8.7 had the note 5 been an 8.

What impresses one year is meh the next. The Note 3 was a 9, even though its casing was cheap metallized plastic at a time when phones like the HTC One were redefining what to expect in terms of materials. The Note 5 was considered by many the best of last year as a well-rounded device, but you correctly point out it was missing features such as microSD. The scoring of the Moto Z higher than the Note 7 is less about personal preference and more about pushing the envelope and innovating. The Note 7 is a grand phone, but is it pushing boundaries, or just a nice iterative upgrade?

I guess that's true, the note 7 was a predictable evolution towards the note 5, with many great competitors as well. Even if my preferences cater to the note series, the Moto Z was indeed one of the most innovative phone of the year, with its mature modular design and razor thin metal body, as well as being overall a very amazing device. I personally still believe that the controversies of the note 5 was worse than the relative stagnation of the note 7, but I can accept the scoring better now. Thank you for your very informative and civilized reply

Samsung fans won't be happy the result. To be fair it does seem a bit low considering the amount of features the phone offers. Unless they're taking cost into consideration as well.

maybe a lot of you would consider the IRIS scan useless, but for me it would really really useful as my hands sweat and most of the time finger print scanners does not work for me.

Is secure replacing knox? Or can both work? That could mean 3 whatsapps and a lot of mistresses :)

A lot of people are saying iPhone 7 will disappoint, I don't think it will. A10 is going to be a beast, new Apple SoC's always are, rumored increased resolutions, memory and storage capacity. Could be very nice phone indeed for Apple users.

of course it will get more than that.. Note7 got 8.7 just to give some space for i7 and i7+, so that i7/i7+ will get lower score than i6/i6+ because lack of innovation, but still better than note7

I am an iPhone fan, and an iPhone 6s user, but I have to say, a rating of 8.7 is a bit low. I was expecting around 9.4+ coz this phone is amazing and all the cons identified were very petty to warrant an 8.7 #IMO

Awesome that you're on a different platform & respect the tech in another device; as do I with the iPhone. From day one, its software just works. It's not perfect, but it works. 2011 for android was terrible because it didn't matter what manufacturer you had, Gingerbread sucked & that's probably what drove a lot of android users to the iPhone along with AT&T losing its carrier exclusivity. Now android is much better & has been the last 3 years but apparently Phone Arena is all but brainwashed now.
