Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Samsung Galaxy S4

Windows Phone still has a lot to overcome if it ever wants to get close to what Android is doing in the space, but in the platform’s quest to spread to the masses, it has one new polarizing figure in the arena that’s making some buzz – the Nokia Lumia 1020. Armed with that monstrous 41-megapixel PureView camera, it’s no doubt bringing the heat to the competition. As always, though, the Samsung Galaxy S4 continues to be one of the shining flagships for Android that not only managed to compel us a few months ago, but it continues to do so without much effort. Does the Nokia Lumia 1020 have enough gas in the tank to keep up with Sammy’s flagship?

He will love a 1020. I got mine a few days ago and the pictures it can take are truly amazing. It has most apps that I care about and looks very modern.. The best part is the way I feel connected to the device. Coming from android that was something I didn't get.

By the price, buy a cheaper Sony DSC-TX66 it pockets well and is a TRUE camera. Save your money and your friend.

The Sony DSC-TX66 can't make calls. Some of us want the best of both worlds, and the 1020 fills that gap. One device that excels at being a phone and a camera.

First of all, If you can pay the price ... no problem ! But you should read the comments from dpreview talking about 1020. Is not that beauty, some pro call the photos "horrible". Second , if money is problem for you, TX66 is a ULTRA 18mpx camera that fits in ALL paints (no volume at all) and costs only $200, you´ll take better photos during night or low light.

You completely missed the point. He wants a phone that takes excellent pictures. Not a phone for one pocket and a camera for another. However, for scientific reasons we try it your way. Let's pay $100 dollars for a (decent) phone, and $200 for a camera. Or we can pay $300 for both in one device.

Why so you can carry around both? With that thought process why not carry around a laptop and a feature phone

You look like an retard with those kind of comments. The argument is clear ... Price + pocket camera better than this WP 1020. I shouldn´t waste my time with you nokia boy.

Are you some sony rep or something? That's pretty specific for a recommendation

I think your friend will be very satisfied with the Lumia 1020. It is a tad thicker and heavier, but feels much better in-hand, takes absolutely stunning photos (speaking from experience, mind you, I spent a fair amount of time with it at a store on Wednesday, albeit just inside the store), has legendary Nokia reliability, durability, and reception (notably things the iphone's always stumbled with), plus a beautiful, fluid, and easy-to-use operating system that's highly intuitive. Not only that, they'll be a bit of a trendsetter using a Windows Phone, especially one with that excellent camera.

How fast? this review just proved that the Dual Core in the 1020 performs the same as the Quad Core in the S4! Just shows how great android and samsung is in the optimizing department! I find it strange that People say the S4's screen is better due to its higher resolution, but test has shown that most people cant see more than apple's retina resolution but only rare people has the ability to see 477ppi's! With the 1020 you will have features that you can actually use daily like [ Brilliant Camera,Video,Maps,Build Quality,Support etc...] not just to brag about useless number of core's or resolution which no one can distinguish.

For some people suddenly camera becomes irrelevant, when their beloved phones get beaten by 1020. But they are secretely cheering for honami ,tsunami or whatever... Heck they even like gs4 zoom

1020 is a WP phone, which will be always smoother than Android (except Nexus-line), but I truly believe Samsung reached something great with the S4´s performance...It really blows away everything! Since I bought it, I couldn´t see any lags...DESPITE I WANTED TO FIND! And the screen, it´s beautiful. Somebody has to be completely blind not to see that beauty. And yes, there is difference (huge) between Retina and 5" FullHD. And something to tell about the camera: It´s enough for me, I don´t need hyped 41 megapixels downgraded to 5megapixels.

I seriously doubt 'how fast'. You've had the epic realization that the phone is a octa core and that point amazes you? That was me 6 months ago. Now, that is totally lost. Laggy UI, bunch of useless features u can't delete and just occupies your disk space. You couldn't see any lags? What about gaming? S4 user (Classmate) looked at me playing Frontline Commando in the subway and he's stunned in how fast my game is running. I'm using Xperia Z. The phone said to have lag issues. I don't have issues with my Xperia Z, while my friend is having overheat issues with his S4. Overheating is unheard of in terms of Nokia and Sony.

So sales will decide the quality of camera ?

In fairness, Nokia's not really doing a huge volume business with the Lumias right now, which is why supply runs out so quickly for high-demand phones, which is smart, as you only want to make enough phones to satisfy demand (e.g. initial, continued, and any needed by insurance companies or warranty work), otherwise you run into the problem Samesung did with the S4 where they made way too many and lost money from it, even though they continue to sell. Nokia's volume sellers are the 500/600/700 lines. In the coming months they'll likely step up production as demand dictates, but anyone who decides "best selling" equates to "best period" is fooling themselves; that'd be like saying a camry is the best and only car to have since it does many things well, and anyone aspiring to Rolls-Royce is foolish because it doesn't sell as many, even though it does things as well, if not better (save fuel economy and price) than the camry.
