HTC has likely recycled the 8MP camera found on the 8X. It features HTC’s ImageSense technology, backside illumination and an f/2.0 aperture lens, which are carry-overs from last year’s One X flagship.

The overall camera interface is clean and well done, but overall the focus/capture process was longer than we’d like. We continue to appreciate the physical shutter button, which can be used to launch the camera even when the device is sleeping. This time around HTC added a burst shooting mode, but it only available when using the HTC Camera app...yes, there are two camera apps out of the box here.

The camera does a fine job in good lighting, displaying good color reproduction and acceptable detail levels. It still suffers from graining in poor lighting, something that HTC’s new Ultrapixel cameras found on the One and One Mini have improved. Videos can be recorded at 1080p, and produced displayed the same strengths and weaknesses seen in still images.

HTC 8XT Sample Video:

The 8XT played all of our test files just fine, although it didn’t recognize the embedded album art in out music. Music sounds good through both the BoomSound speakers and the included headphones.

As mentioned earlier, the decreased screen resolution is more noticeable in areas such as video playback, but at least the 8XT was able to handle the various file formats we threw at it.

For any Sprint user coming from the HTC Arrive, this is a huge step up. Just like the Arrive before it, this 8XT is solid. It is light, yet not of a plastic-cheap-feeling build. It is just really nice to hold and use. Sure, it doesn't have a higher-res screen, and more memory would have been nice. But this device just feels great!! The sound quality with BoomSound is really nice, and even the sound over headphones is a step up. Windows Phone 8 is just great too!! A good step up from WP7.5. The camera is rated one less than "Excellent" for there certainly are better smartphone cameras out there, without mentioning names. So, can't be perfect there. And, as previously mentioned, there are better screen resolutions out there too, thus, not perfect there. However, both the camera and screen are still very nice. Bottom line, if you liked your HTC Arrive, you will love the 8XT. I suggest check best price for this phone at my blog: Good luck!

480x800? Really? I thought this was supposed to be an upgrade. Atleast the resolution could have remained unchanged...this is going to hurt!

Too bad this is on Sprint's horrible network had to return & back to Tmobile well metroPCS right now where I am but there on Tmobiles network in my area . Looking forward to using Htc one S . Just got good deal on. To bad because this was a good device while I tried it. But again Sprint just doesn't cut it. I wonder how long they can hold on to the number 3 spot. I do find myself missing some certain apps too WP is still lacking & not just garbage ones. One of my banking apps etc is not on WP.

I haven't had a chance to play with this phone yet since the 2 Sprint stores I went to didn't have it! I will be getting the Samsung but the one thing that stands out to me is all of these phone look alike. With that in mind the only real thing they can do is make them a decent size. The ultimate would be ASUS Padfone with WP on it but like Sprint ASUS has it's head up it's A$$!
