Essential Phone Review

There is more to the Essential PH-1 (PH-one, phone, we see what they did there) than mere simplicity, but it is a good place to start. The beginning of such journeys usually reveal areas that need some improvement and refined development, and that is the case here.

A 4 is a perfectly realistic rating given the circumstances. After all, this is Essential's first device and they don't have a billion-dollar marketing budget that accounts for flying reviewers to San Francisco for product reveals and sitting them in fancy hotels. It seems to me that the biggest mistake Essential made was to skip PhoneArena when they were giving out free review units. I don't particularly care about this phone - I can just see a pattern in PA's grading system that keeps favoring big names and presents the faults and strengths of devices selectively.

A 4 rating? Ouch! But some of these cons should have been for other phones prior to this one, as well. Fair is fair.

It's not the OEM fault. It's Android. Look I left Apple once again for Android and I'm about to go back. After 3 months with the 8+ battery is once again crap. The operating system is just terrible. The phone is slow. Yes I've cleared system cache and even did a factory reset. It's not Samsung. There's very little bloat most can be removed. The operating system is built on a platform of years of just jumbled crap. No I don't want to root. I just want it to work like it did the day out of the box. Android fan boys just tell me it's not possible.

Neither my iPad worked like the day I took it out of the box. Do you want my iPad2 in exchange for your S8+?

I'm not arguing with the results of this review by any means as it was based on his particular experience with the device. I haven't bothered looking up other reviews for it yet because I'm not terribly interested in getting it anyways, but for those of you that may have read other reviews, are the reviews generally about the same? Or do the other reviews have the same complaints?

Holy sh*t....whaaaaaat! Honestly though, from reading reviews from every day users in other sites' comment sections...a vast majority haven't been too happy with theirs.

4 is a very low rating .. Phonearena is punishing Andy Rubin for deciding to build a new phone :D

Essential phone is slippery, heavy and the worst thing gathers dust in the earpiece and clearly becomes visible. It's messes the beauty of the phone as well as disrupts earpiece sound.

User rating is based on one review. Andy Rubin himself perhaps?

This looks to me like a review especially designed to minimize the Essential Phone's value compared to the iPhones. All other reviewers love the phone, minus the cameras. This review doesn't even have the battery life graph for the Essential, why ? Because it is actually better than the iPhones in this area.

Just an amazing idea to create a phone like that but the execution isn't the best as far as we could see. I am very optimistic and willing to buy if they listen to reviews and correct the down sides. Battery User interface liquidity Photo quality optimization IP68 etc etc

This review should really be updated. I know there were issues at the beginning, but all the updates have corrected those. I've had my Essential Phone for a few months now and have really enjoyed the experience. The camera app is fine and the pictures are quite excellent. Operation is smooth and fast. With the price between $400-$500, it's really tough to beat.

So I actually have the phone and have been using it for 5 months now. I got it on a lease through Sprint. I told myself I'd never lease, rent, or buy a phone from my phone company ever again, but got such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. I should have... The processor is FAST it has tons of storage compared to anything else at the price point I paid. The camera problems are software based. It's easy to side load or legit load a new camera app from the play store. I have not had ANY problem with the OG app or a sided loaded camera app taking pictures, but I do not take selfies ever. I use my camera two or three times a week max. The screen is awesome. The ratio kills everything else. The small cut out for the camera is tiny and not distracting. The only problem is most apps don't utilize the entire screen. They usually go up to the camera cutout and stop. They don't go around it. It's bright, sharp, and really a great screen. If you use google voice as your phone number, do NOT buy this phone!! It will NOT work properly and Sprint's solution to this problem is to contact Google (yea right) or just don't use the app which is totally ridiculous if you use your google voice number like I do. NO ONE has my regular cell number. Cases, screen protectors, and other phone specific accessories are virtually non existent. I own the ONLY case made for it. It is actually a REALLY good case. If you use no case at all or skin, you will drop this phone. I do not drop phones. I probably dropped all my phones in the last 10 years less than 5 times total. I dropped the PH-1 3 times in the first DAY. It looks cool, but is impractical. I paid/am paying a total of $280 for the life of the lease. $280 = Definitely worth it! $400 is ok. I'd probably get a Moto G5S+ instead cheaper and own it outright with no contract/lease. For $700, you'd have to be stupid to buy this. I'd give the phone a 6 at least. Maximum of 7 as a rating. 4 is ridiculous.

"That makes the 5.7-inch display appear deceptively small given the physical size of the Essential phone." This has to be one the most retarded thing I read this month, most likely this year and possibly ever.
