BlackBerry Storm Review

0. phoneArena posted on 25 Nov 2008, 09:48

What’s this, the new BlackBerry? Woah, it has no keyboard. And…did it just click? You’ve never clicked a screen before, is that supposed to happen? Is it supposed to feel so…tiring? And why is this screen wiggling around, am I supposed to be seeing the circuit board? Why is it so heavy; the iPhone isn’t this heavy? The interface is pretty neat, but why are page transitions taking so long. Did it just flip orientations on me? I didn’t even move it. Wait, now I did move it and the orientation isn’t following...

Whom ever wrote this review represents phonearena.com I now see phonearena.com as a biased OPINION website. the storm is awesome and has very easy to fix flaws. I wont be coming back to this site for a long time after this very biased review. "but but but.. the touch is soo ewwie, and ooh my goshhhhh u can see the circuits! ewwiee! and oh wait boo hoo is sooo slow even though its a damn PDA that has all kinds of applicatiosn runninig in the background that i needed to turn off cause its not like my iphone which can only do one thing at once... boo hoo". please people go play with the phone first

Darm we don't get the privlidge of reading your whinny post any more? I guess you will just stay off the internet now since EVERY review I read (with exception to the fanboys) says the exact same thing. Get over it cry baby...if you like it great...I will take the opinion of someone tht reviews phones for a living over yours any day.

No i agree with 26. This is most definately an insane biased review for any body who has actually seen this phone and knows how to run it like a damn blackberry. The bold would get the exact same review if it wasnt an Iphone rival. I would also say that phonearena.com has lost a tad bit of credibility for future reviews.

It's not biased at all. I actually went to the Verizon store to check it out and I was not impressed. It froze within in 30 seconds of use. How dumb is that

I think the review is pretty spot-on. The only thing harsh about the review was the number at the end. 5.5 is a little low IN MY OPINION. For the reviewer, it wasn't. Based on the article, he put most emphasis on the messaging portion, which is a BB strongpoint. In relation to other blackberries, I would agree and 5.5/10 would be pretty accurate. But with the other features the phone offers, and many of the bugs more annoying the deal breaking, I think 7-8/10 would be close. I still don't think it wears your thumbs out that much typing a message, and it is pretty accurate for me. I am holding out for a software update or some hands-on time with the Touch Pro before I leave my voyager, however.

I understand where most of the views are coming from, but I guess people should know that while the phone was in testing a new software update came out ever week for the last few weeks to resolve different issues. I agree that the phone still has some issues that still need to be resolved before it can be considered a good phones. The great thing about OTA is that once RIM release a software update all you have to do is download it to your handset and do a quick soft reset and you should be good to go. I guess that is if the update doesn't brick you phone, but that's a whole different issue.

i dont understand how it received an average of 5.5 when if u add up and average the scores for each of the categories...it comes to 8.1...so is phonearena intentionally trying to make it look worse?

checked out the phone today in chulavista store. 2 DEMOS, ONE WOULDNT EVEN TURN ON POWER CORD ATTATCHED and everything. the othe froze on opening a web page. thats the image this first impression left. useless. the one that was off, you could see tiny dots or the circuit if you will, and look closely enough you can see how the entire screen moves, you can probly pry it off with a paperclip. i dont know about this phone.hhmmm

And you can probbably break the screen of an iPhone with a spoon. Point being you can break anything if you use it incorrectly, you are an idiot if you try and pry out the screen. Oh and McFly, did it ever occur to you that perhaps the power cord was not functional and the device was just depleted of battery life? And did you check to see what applications where running that may cause the device to lag. You would be shocked to see the amount of people that do not know how to properly close applications on a Blackberry (hitting the end or clear key does not close an app).

thats the point, COULDNT DO A DAMN THING, AND YEAH IT WAS FUNCTIONAL, peice of crap started faulting with the people in front of me, i asked for help, and your always informed of everything reps couldnt figure it out. there answer was worse. oh its probably the excessive use. thats not what i want to hear. i might excessively use it.

Its not. Go to wikipedia and wiki it. You'll se the Storm already has 4 unsatisfied reviewers. So how many reviews does it take to say its an incomplete, ill-conceived and possibly rushed device. I think RIM wanted to be the cool new "it" and rushed the idea that we want a clickable screen. However that remains to be seen. IF even 10,000 buy it then its worth producing isn't it. After all people still buy Buicks.

Dear, Phonearena.com Those of us that have been following your site (in fact, it was one of the main sites I made a favorite) - appreciate your views and wealth of information you provide daily. Thanks again for all your hard work and detailed reviews. I'm hoping all the negative responses don't ruin it for us who do care you took the time at all to review these products. Thank you! Now, as for myself - first time Crackberry (what ever that means - no I don't do drugs! :)... I must admit having the rollerball on the curve has served as a very functional option. In fact, along with the keyboard - you can almost one hand a response to an email which is very hard to achieve with a Windows Mobile device which I have tons including the new HTC Touch PRO. I also am currently doing allot of consulting helping others that have the Pearl & Curve and many enjoy the rollerball as well. That being said, I have advised " Prior " to this review and anyone I know buying this device to please beware that CORP. policy will lock the device and without a keyboard it may serve as a difficult device to function without some overrides (making calls while the device is locked) and speed dial settings since the keyboard is on the screen. By the way, Verizon gave me the Dare as a way to keep my account, however I have to be completely honest with you - I just didn't find any use other than a media player and entertainment device. So, I sent it back. As well as I tried the i760 so I sure my response would be the same for the Samsung Omnia & Saga. Folks, when it all boils down to it - it's functionality vs. cost. And I'm sure everyone knows, Verizon personally changed their data paks on Nov. 14 to require $29.99 particularly for all these devices they are releasing now including the Storm. Unless you get the all you can eat pak - your going to be paying quite a bit for EACH phone you have for your data services. Not shocked about the GPS and I'm still waiting to hear (which I think I already know the answer), The Touch PRO " XV6850 " as well has GPS locked. SIDE NOTE: Phonearena.com ... Do you have access to a XV6850 to confirm the RAM & FLASH available on Verizon's Touch PRO ? I'm seeing posts of 49 mb or less on RAM and can't confirm the FLASH left without ANY apps loaded. Thanks again for everything! So in short, it might be a good idea to actually use the device for a while - then come back to Phonearena.com and give your reviews. I not to sure your review will be to far off from theirs because we all get excited each time a new device comes out but in the end - how well does it serve or meet your daily needs. Just my 2 cents ( no bias ), just a different view of things. Thanks for reading this long post. Take Care!!!

I think you chaps in the states yap on too much about the "next best thing" and then get your hopes dashed in an instant or stick to your "if" bad decision like its faith. Its a phone, its not Jesus. The purpose of all reviews is description and hopefully details on how it works. Not the good and the bad and the obvious ugly. Really are you'll all 20 somethings that live with mommy and spend days on forums flaming reviews? The review was detailed and I liked it. The detail I liked is that it hurts the thumbs since clicking a mouse button for me hurts with my hyper-sensitive skin. I'm not a fan of the other side either ( got an iPod Touch). By the way a I recommend the Oxford dictionary for you'll to learn what "bias" and "critical" really means.

It is official. I didn't mind the biased reviews and such provided by phonearena.com. But at the same time, I've never seen such a terribly presented review. For you to go as far as to quote the commercial with your own words is a slap in the face. Let's recall the iPhone's first review. Aboslutely nothing wrong with it. And if there was an issue, there was a fix coming. Phonearena.com should be ashamed of themselves for the incredibly distasteful review. The Blackberry Storm, just like MOST if not EVERY first generation phone will have issues. I am saddened to see that the front office has allowed a review like this to be posted as it shows no confidence in any services provided by either Blackberry or Verizon Wireless. I'm sure that a review like this will cause backlash from businesses and customers alike and I hope that it escalates through to the appropriate channels. Phonearena has officially lost all my respect for any and all of its personnel and opinions due to its biased and partial standings. My opinion may not mean anything and I can live with that. But, the most effective form of marketing is word-of-mouth. So I will not be the only person that at least hears about the horrible content of this website. Happy Holidays!

have any of you guys even had the phone? I got one the first day it came and yes it does have some issues but the majority of those issues will be sorted out with some firmware updates. let us not forget all the problems that the iphone 3g had when it first came out. i have had an iphone and now i have the storm and i would take the storm over an iphone any day! the iphones keyboard is total crap and if your fingers get tired using the storms key board your weak. My friends were amazed at how fast i could type on my storm. though the storm is not a perfect device i do have my complaints. One being the word selecting when your in your messages is a pain the should have put a cursor mode in those screens for selecting just like on the web browser. The second thing and with all do respect to phone arena but they missed the mark big time in the battery life rating the must not use there phone very much because my take is hugely different. i run my own business and i am on my phone all day doing stuff on the internet, making phone calls, and emailing and texting. none of this was a problem with my curve i would still have plenty of battery by the end of the day. its a completely different story with my storm the battery life is horrid i have to charge it after Im done at work or i wont have it for the rest of the day. keep in mind i work 6:00 am to 12:00pm and that is not very good at all. i was very disappointed in blackberry here because thats one of the things that they are known for is excellent battery life. i do agree it has some flaws but to go and say that it is garbage and a complete miss on rim's part is just ignorant.

Now, to all the people bagging the Storm and Verizon Wireless. This will be my last post. You all are terribly misinformed. Verizon Wireless is THE BEST and MOST RELIABLE SERVICE available. You people are stubborn and at the same time, very ignorant. Hopefully your parents didn't pass those traits on to you as then you would officially be SOL! Regardless of the reason, there is no proof that you could possibly provide that says anything other than Verizon Wireless is #1. On the other hand, coverage maps, surveys, awards, consistency all speak for a company that provide the service people pay for. The reason why other carriers are cheaper, is simple. You never get the WHOLE package. Unlimited calling plans come with more dropped calls. Simply Everything with no customer service. And you people complain about pricing? Verizon Wireless may not be for everyone but I can tell you who it is for. The person who wants to be taken care of the first time they call. The person that is willing to pay the extra dollar for Customer Service that is available 7 days a week! Are you serious? Some carriers don't even operate past six o'clock. But in your small world, you think there's no reason for higher prices. Fortunately, there are the brighter bunch of people who know they can reach someone until 11pm NATIONWIDE! Who are willing to pay extra because they understand the true meaning of INDUSTRY LEADER! So for you and anyone else who speaks before they think, don't! Keep your petty thoughts to yourselves because like many of the reviews on phonearena.com, they're just opinions and they stink. GO VZW

just one more reason that i would like to add for why the storm is better than the iphone. service plain and simple what is the point of having one of these high tech devices if you cant get coverage? att's service is just horrible those guys are crooks you pay verizon's price's for tmobile's coverage. at least tmobile is cheap. i have had all three carriers and verizon's coverage is better by leaps and bounds and with the take over of alltell taking place its just going to keep getting better. if you iphone users have a problem with that you can give me a call wait you probably dont have any coverage right now. too bad. =(
