Apple iPhone 5 Review

0. phoneArena posted on 22 Sep 2012, 17:25

Interestingly enough this time around, it seems as though Apple is the one that’s actually catching up to the competition, since they’ve finally brought a bigger screen and speedy 4G LTE connectivity to the iPhone 5 – while continuing to improve with a retooled camera lens and new chipset. Add in that it’s flaunting a new design, though still ...

i think it was a good review. this should have it's 9 because it is genuinely a nice phone but this stale iteration of iOS shouldn't get any more passes. iOS 7 better bring some freshly immense changes to the platform or there's going to be a problem because who knows what Key Lime Pie and WP8.x will bring. i think Apple kind of missed the point of why we want a larger screen though. i don't think the benefits outweigh the inconvenience this is going to be for iOS developers. since the display is only taller there's going to be no difference in the typing experience unless you go to landscape which is a shame because that's always the thing that turns me off the most when using an iPhone. i think Apple's Thumb Ratio Philosophy is pretty flawed. i've noticed three different ways i use my phone when i actually pay attention to it. the one handed way that Apple seems to be paying so much attention to, the cradling my phone with my left hand while i actually operate it with my right hand way and the two handed typing way. 2 of these ways benefit more from having a wider display and also i know i may have large hands but they're not much larger than the average size and when i'm holding the phone at a 120-130 degree angle (90 degrees being the tip of my middle finger) with the bottom right corner being pressed into the middle of my palm by my fingers which seems pretty normal to me, i have the entire length of my thumb and also the part of the palm where the metacarpal for my thumb is (i forget what it's called. xD) that can fold in slightly and extend my thumb even further. i can definitely use this Galaxy Nexus with one hand comfortably and it has a 4.65" display. i think Apple is holding it wrong...

Design wise, it is a huge improvement. Bigger display, great camera, great battery life, great design in general. However the iPhone's biggest problem is with IOS itself. It's so boring and old now. Please Apple, you put a very powerful processor on it and yet IOS is the same old boring limited software, bring something new to the table. ICS was the true begining of the android revolution and it just gets much better with JB. You need to counter attack it, not with lawsuits, that is.

People like iOS, Apple has managed to build a unique interface which is adored by millions. Of course you can prefer the more customizable Android or the Live Tiles on Windows Phone, but for most people their is absolutely nothing wrong with iOS.

You never change a winning formula.

Which explains why Android is always changing through its releases. And no, android fans, I'm not referring to the customized UI by different manufacturers.

yeah... and yet look at android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 they changed very little

and look at android 4.0, 4.1.
and you talk about change?

shouldn't change be evolving.

I gotta admit. IOS would be seriously compelling for people who just want their phones to work(like my mom).

android phones are designed for techy people(though nontechy people can use it just fine)

although i find IOS really bland and boring, but its also fast, responsive and it just "works", unlike *some* android phones(notice i didn't say galaxy s III)

you can have too much of a good thing though and before you get your knickers in a knock i just mean the SAME good thing. keep eating cookies for 6 years and i'm pretty sure you'd be ready for a nice bowl of ice cream or a good fruit...

i like the new iPhone even though this should've been what came out last year and i still think iOS kind of blows.

How is In-cell touchscreen note worthy if you can't tell the difference? an come on every part of the review the words "the same" are used and this got a 9 so they change the chip and add a masterful innovative 5 row of icons and its a 9. wow we all knew this horrible review was coming bigger let down than the phone itself

all in all it's an alright phone. I'd give it an 8-8.5. Since there is only one type, Apple managed to get all the components (processor etc.) running smoothely. However, IOS is really old (both outdated and stale) and it really enrages me how these blind IOS followers will buy anything Apple makes. Perhaps if Apple fanboys didn't manage to become some kind of religious cult and buy everything Apple makes, Apple would SERIOUSLY revamp IOS (like bringing in new features that actually mean something, not useless maps and siri updates)

I dont care if it' the best phone ever created by mankind, it's still an apple and for that reason alone I would never own one or use one. Apple is a company I will never support with my business.Their willingness to sue any company who makes a decent phone becasue they think they have created the smart phone and therefore own the rights to it is insane. No thank you. I would rather use a paper cup and a string, or did they create that to.

Went into Best Buy to see whats the deal with the iphone 5. I was disappointed. The phone was too small and it looks like the 4s. They had the 4s and 5 side by side. People were better off keepjng the 4s because Apple will release the iPhone 5s next year. I like ios but will stay with Android. My international Galaxy Note GT-N7000 makes the iphone look like a toy. The Galaxy Note 2 will put the iphone 5 fanboys to rest come next month.

It is sad when reviewers have to just sing and praise the newest iphone just because it is a iphone.

There is no doubt that there are major weaknesses in the iphone and ios. EG IOS sucks at playing back a wide variety of local videos, can't do things like play amazon video via the browser because of no flash ability, is still a relatively small screen for watching videos, has to be jailbroken to customize, lacks a proper file manager for ease of file manipulation, lacks a range of different hardware so people can be different etc.

There is no denying the iphone is a great smartphone but come on it isn't without its flaws.

If it wasn't for a lack of removable memory i'd make the 5 my first smartphone. iCloud? No thanks. I'll take responsibility for storing my data.

The htc incredible 4 looks more and more like becoming my first smartphone. I hope vzw will have a holiday special such as "free" with a new contract, or buy 1 get 1 free with a new contract.

We'll see.

I feel 9/10 is a fair score considering the target audience. But I don't understand why lack of bluetooth ftp, usb mass storage, micro sd slot and removable battery are not mentioned in the cons.

id say this is pretty bias. not an android fan, you see, when they review other phones, they say "screen not big enough for competition blah blah blah", i dont see it here,l. "mediocre battery life", neither did i see that here. the 4s has a terrible battery life. and the maps? check 9gag. its being bashed all over the place. more? hmmm.. ahh! usually they would say, dual core processor not on par with the already equipped quad-core phones. nope didnt see that either. in others, you would see those. just unfair. i dont care if they say it doesnt affect the performance. others still have those flaws mentioned. not a fan of anything. when i read this review, i felt like apple paid PA to give them a nice high review. putting others aside. Thats just how I see apple now, Gold digger.

Great review John. I'm really impressed with the phone so far since I've had it, dare I say I like it more than my Galaxy SIII. It's really the perfect size for one-handed use and it's platform experience is really consistent, something you don't see, even on the Galaxy SIII at times. I'm surprised at the amount of Apple haters here though... Why not just love all devices?

The android fans here wish the site was named AndroidArena, but forget its PhoneArena, so they cry about it.
