Samsung unveils the Galaxy A10s with a larger battery, improved cameras and more

This morning, Samsung added another Galaxy A10 variant by introducing the Galaxy A10s. The new model joins the Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A10e as members of the popular mid-range line. The Galaxy A10s has many of the same specs found on the A10 including the 6.2-inch LCD Infinity-V display sporting an HD+ resolution of  720 x 1520. This works out to an aspect ratio of 19:9. The new phone also has the same 2GB of memory and 32GB of storage found on the Galaxy A10. While the latter is powered by the Exynos 7884 chipset, all Samsung says about the chip driving the Galaxy A10s is that it carries eight cores with four running at 2GHz and the other four at 1.5GHz.

The changes found on the Galaxy A10s include an improved 8MP front-facing selfie camera (compared to 5MP on the A10) and an additional 2MP depth sensor to go with the 13MP camera in the back. This should allow those with the new handset to snap portraits with an improved bokeh (blur) effect. But users might find that the most important improvement between the Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A10s is the 17.6% bump in the capacity of the battery. The new phone is equipped with a 4000mAh battery, providing a nice bump from the 3400mAh component found in the older model. And while the Galaxy A10 sports a micro USB port, it is unknown whether Samsung has decided to give the Galaxy A10s a Type-C port instead.

Now all of this might sound confusing to those in the states familiar with the Galaxy A10e. This model, available from many U.S. carriers, features a notched 5.83-inch LCD display with a 720 x 1560 resolution (19.5:9 aspect ratio).  There is an 8MP camera in back, a front-facing 5MP selfie snapper and a 3000mAh battery. This device does have a Type-C port onboard.

Samsung launched the Galaxy A series earlier this year to replace the Galaxy J line. The phones feature viable cameras, large batteries, and more affordable price tags. Samsung rung up over 5 million units of the Galaxy A handsets in just the first 70 days following their release, generating over $1 billion in revenue. In the U.S., the Galaxy A10e is available from all four major U.S. carriers while the Galaxy A20 can be found at T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. The Galaxy A50 is offered by Verizon and Sprint. Some of the carriers are offering deals on these phones. For example, the Galaxy A10e is free at Verizon and T-Mobile with the addition of a new line. U.S. consumers might be attracted by the much lower prices for the mid-rangers compared to the price tags found on the just-announced Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. For example, the Galaxy A50 is priced at $349.99 in the states compared to $949.99 and up for the Galaxy Note 10 and $1,099.99 and up for the Galaxy Note 10+.

Samsung has high hopes for the Galaxy A line in India where Samsung was once the most popular brand. Value for money manufacturers like Xiaomi are doing well in the country that remains the second-largest smartphone market in the world. But due to its position as a developing market, pricing is very important. And that is why the combination of appealing specs (especially for the camera and battery) and decent pricing makes Samsung's Galaxy A series a powerful response to Xiaomi and some of the other value brands that were eating Sammy's lunch in the region.

There is no word yet on when we might expect the Galaxy A10s to be released, the pricing of the phone and the markets where it will be available. We do know that the handset will be offered in Blue, Green, Red, and Black.
