Xiaomi joins the Wireless Power Consortium; Mi 7 could feature wireless charging
Once known as China's Apple, Xiaomi is apparently following in Apple's footsteps when it comes to wireless charging. The 2017 iPhone models all support wireless charging for the first time, and apparently the next Xiaomi flagship model will too. Today, the Chinese manufacturer apparently joined the Wireless Power Consortium, the group of tech firms that have the goal of promoting the Qi wireless charging platform.

Apple joined the consortium in February, and while Xiaomi hasn't made an official announcement, the company is listed on the WPC website as a member. As a result, we would expect to see the feature made available with the Xiaomi Mi 7, the manufacturer's next flagship phone.

It might have been nice to have wireless charging available for the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, adding to the premium nature of the edge-to-edge screened handset. After all, a phone that uses bone conduction for audio should offer wireless charging. But Xiaomi fans just might be happy with the strong possibility that wireless charging seems probable for the Mi 7.

With the Qi system, a device is placed on a pad that is plugged into an outlet. Through the use of induction charging (which uses coils inside the phone and the pad), a magnetic field is created which produces electricity. Qi supported pads can be found at certain fast food restaurants as a way to attract those hungry for food that happen to own a smartphone with a battery starving for power.
