With the iPhone 8, Apple surrenders design leadership to Samsung

Ever since the original iPhone, Apple has been the leader in build quality and aesthetics. This year, however, Samsung has assumed the role of design leader and trend setter with the Galaxy S8. Here's where Apple slipped up.

iPhone 5 in black... those black on black accents with the beveled edges. So lovely. The 5S ruined it with "space gray"... ie neither black nor gray.

Apple surrendered the so called title once the iPhone 7 came out and was identical to its predecessor and hasn't changed since. As usual the HTC One M8 isn't given enough credit for being the trendsetter in the design language adopted by Apple for the iPhone 6 and many other manufacturers. There have been several phones that were better looking than the iPhone 5 but it's so subjective that there's no point in debating it. Apple has missed the mark completely with the iPhone X though. Seems it has taken a once in a century lunar eclipse for PA to finally admit the truth in 2017.

RAY S. Despite my no love for Apple, I disagree with this article , Apple that we all know , Apple that made the iconic ipod touch 4th gen , amazing slim metal unibody back those days, when smartphones used to begin ugly and bulky , the same Apple can always be revolutionary, but No! They stopped being revolutionary, well why? Because million idiots would still buy their devices even if they keep the same design for years, I'm a consumer and im not a dumba**, consumer has the power to control the maker, I'm a die hard Samsung fan that also love my physical qwerty blackberry phones.. we complain to Samsung every year and they listen even though they didn't listen to all out yearnings, but half bread is better than none.. So my point is very simply, the same Apple that we all know can come out every year with something different and outstanding, but why should they? Sheep keep flocking to apple store in their thousands daily.. let's make a simple example. Iphone 8 and 8 plus would have be a 10/10 if it was released as the iPhone 6s/6s plus years ago .. but Apple don't have to cos their consumer have lost their power , the power of the consumer should be at least 75% but Apple fan boy are happy with their boring life .. Don't see apple as non revolutionary with their design.. they are f**king capable but the consumer are not challenging then, people like you Ray J.. I bet you didn't get a taste of your own Kim K Tech site like you phonearena that keep d*ckridding Apple.. even if they keep the same iPhone 6 design for 10 years.. all you babies tech boys of phonearena would still act like a virg*in that need to get laid

I gave you +1 not because you wrote something meaningful but for your patience in typing out such a long message.

If it weren't for the notch, I'd agree with you. That notch isn't daring in my eyes, it's a design flaw.

Its not a design flaw, it's a compromise. They can't put the sensors and camera under the display, so they need bezel. But making it a notch just so you can add a few extra percent of screen to body ratio just for marketing purposes is an inelegant, amateurish solution.

It is a design flaw. Because they could have accomplished the same by simply have the bezel be the same thickness at the top as the notch. Now devs have to make UI compromises in apps to make them look proper an then millions of apps will never be updated too fit. Apple needed yet another way to prevent usage of older apps: 1st - they removed support for them in iOS11. 2nd - the notch will make millions of apps look stupid because they won't be update and the notch will get in the way of stuff...PERMENANTLY!!! If you have to make a compromise, then its a flaw that you are compromising for.

Its not a design flaw. A design flaw is something that doesn't work as intended because of the design. The YouTube 4 antenna was a design flaw. That doesn't cover this. It's a bad design, but not a flaw.

Exactly. It's inelegant. Steve Jobs liked things to be elegant and symmetrical. Having a notch on the top but not the bottom just so they can have a top-to-bottom screen is not symmetrical. It just looks messy.

But it looks better than the Essential Phone notch.

The bias is still easily visible here. Saying that Apple has had the best designs sine 2007? What about the HTC one M7? Head and shoulders above every phone released in 2013(design wise). Anyone who disagrees is entitled to be willfully wrong.

Design wise from that era, I choose LG G2. G3. and G4.

I'd say the S6 was when the design aspect of Samsung phones really took off. Ever since that release they've thoroughly outclassed Apple design wise, and that's coming from an iPhone fan. Having said that though, does the public give a damn? Apple has one major advantage that makes the outer shell of any iPhone meaningless: iOS. And no, that's not me saying iOS is better than Android, but factoring the probable reasoning why despite design dominance over Apple, Samsung can't sell anywhere near the total number of flagships. This is why having your own software running on hardware is so important: As long as Apple has iOS, they hold the market's value. Feel free to debate that if you wish, but last quarter Apple generated 65% of all mobile profits in the industry, and are expected to generate 90% this coming quarter. Think about that for a second: Apple, who'd yet to release a single phone in 2017, took almost two-thirds of the money made, which is pretty ridiculous. Nothing Samsung or anyone else releases this year will outsell the iPhone 8 duo in the span of their lifecycle, which says a lot about what consumers' in the market for premium phones want. Blah... blah... blah... damn this post is long!

If just Techie wrote this and switched Apple with Samsung, you would've went crazy on him This article is about design, I don't get why you felt the need to brag about the OS or the share market.

If Techie had written that, it would've been filled to the brim with typos and calling iPhone users animals. And I did start out by saying Samsung is clearly superior design wise and have been for a good while now. My overarching point is when does it all become moot? Apple has a pseudo-bezelless phone now, and all phones are beginning to look the same externally. At some point software will be the most glaring differentiator between OEMs, and in that aspect at least, Apple has a very distinctly advantageous position. That's all I'm saying.

design language! no profit margins here, design please! en that notch is a pain in the ass looking at it those bezels on iPhone 8 are from which year again? let's agree here iOS is great but how will I get to the ios without looking at the phone?

The notch is... well... awful. No question about that. However, for better or worse, Apple took a chance with the X release, and that should be noted. Make no mistake, Apple could've just released the iPhone 6sss(+) that is the iPhone 8 duo and been perfectly fine. However, the fact that they did release the (clearly not ready) X says a lot about what the industry is headed towards in the next two years. Side bezels on the X needs to go, full stop, but I'm not sure the Notch isn't some form of differentiation mechanism SPECIFICALLY implemented by Apple from the outset as a way to maintain a unique brand image. We may find it an eyesore, but a lot of people find it cool looking and a personality addition to an otherwise ordinary slab of glass and metal. That could mean (unfortunately) we see a Notch on the next few, but they'll likely be less intrusive as time passes, hopefully.

They took a chance they didn't have too and now they are the laughing stock in the tech industry. Any OEM who follows that design is a pure fool. The Essential I also though was stupid with a hole in the middle of the display. But I finally got to see one and it is not to bad, though still a bad and stupid idea. Here is the problem with the Notch and uts simple. The Apple Store has over what now, 7M applications? 90% of them are never gonna be updated to the iPhone X UI. That means for a person with an older game or app, who gets an iPhone will have 2 sets of apps. One that is and has been adjusted to the new iPhone X UI and many that don't. That is the problem and the reason no one buy nerds are talking about it, is because its Apple. If Samsung had done such, you all would have been all over ti and PA would have written 13 bad luck/nasty articles about it.

Apple has zero software advantage, As amny Android users stated, because of the design of iOS, when Apple started adding features; the UI would be come a nightmare. And tech people like Chris Perillo and others, especially devs are finding the fragmentation Apple created with the iPhone X, is gonna hurt them more than help them.

Its funny when a writer is not favoring the cupertino company then apple die hards remove the goalpoasts and profits share becomes their defending point. 99%at least of ios and android users are not stakesholders and really dont care which OEM earns the most. Most of them do care about design though no matter how much a device costs

"Its funny when a writer is not favoring the cupertino company then apple die hards remove the goalpoasts and profits share becomes their defending point." Fam, read the prologue of that post again. Maybe read it twice to fully digest it, because you seem a little slow on the uptick. "99%at least of ios and android users are not stakesholders and really dont care which OEM earns the most." Those numbers are erroneously inaccurate. "Most of them do care about design though no matter how much a device costs" Ehhhh... then why are iPhones outselling Galaxies then? I'm not sure what you've even posted really relates to what I'm saying at all. I stated pretty early on that Samsung is clearly out designing Apple, but what merits have they acquired in doing so? And have we conveniently forgotten that businesses exist to MAKE MONEY?

Lol i am not slow at all ..you sound nervous on the other hand and see no reason unless the apple stock is falling..although you admitted early that samsung is out designing apple, discussing about profits share and why do businesses exist in this thread is irelevant.period. Approx 5 billion people will use mobile devices by the end of 2017..please check how many do own stocks in the technology industry and do the math (i dont have numbers). Last but not least you are comparing apples to oranges..samsung is not the only oem in the android ecosystem so iphones will always outsell galaxies.. there is no competition in the ios universe..if and when apple allows other oems to use ios then we discuss again.cheers
