Will the virtual home button of the Galaxy S8 burn in the AMOLED display? Nope! Here's how Samsung prevents that

AMOLED screens are great for a few reasons — the true blacks, the eye-popping colors, the energy-saving opportunities, brightness, and more. But they are not without their downsides and a big one, which is not yet fully solved, is the so-called burn-in.

People go on about oled like it's the be all end all, something always comes along to replace current tech.

Amoled is trash period. Until they fix the burn in issue it is trash, who would want a display which degrades overtime???

I have notification area that burnt into my S6+ screen, and I have black dead pixels in the top right side of the screen. My phone is coming up to 2 years old in August, I just hope I don't get this again!

Arstechnica had this article showing Samsung on screen button vs the rest.https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/04/samsung-galaxy-s8-review-shiny-new-hardware-meets-old-software-habits/2/ That is actually very smart. The icons are intentionally different to allow minimal repositioning in order to protect the OLED screen. With the classic icons they would have had to move them the entire width of the icon. Those gaps in the lines are essential.
