Why I think $800 is too much for the Galaxy S7 edge

It wants to be the ultimate smartphone. But is it? After a week of using it, I can say there are things about it that make the Galaxy S7 edge appear markedly underperforming considering its hefty $800 price tag...

... Being I own an Galaxy S7 Edge, I can only agree with Exhibit 2. Although I set my scanner up from how I typically hold up my phone so it's not really a problem. Everything else is either a opinion or an option you don't have to use. I was really looking forward to seeing what you had to say but you're nitpicking. Indeed understandable being this phone is near flawless.

Yep, all $600+ phones are overpriced compared to those $200-400 Chinese phones with "flagship specs" But most people here, me included, are willing to pay extra for various reasons (e.g. for me faster updates and dev support)

Because the 6s plus is completely worth it, that's why there isn't an article about why its not.

How is a phone that has outdated tech, inferior design and mid-range specs worth it, when a leading edge, class leading phone with top-end specs is not. Maybe I should write an article that is far nearer the truth and then by your thinking it will be worth it.

Inferior design sure I'll give you that but outdated tech????? nothing is outdated in the 6s plus.

It screen while better than any other iPhone is still pathetic and outdated by todays standards. No wireless or fast charging built in means Apple battery package is outdated. The camera is outdated compared to the leading Android flagships. Even the OS is outdated a flagship phone with top-end price that is not much more than a glorified app launcher. It uncustomizable home screens are still much the same as the original iPhone, if that is not outdated I do not know what is!

1080p Isn't outdated and QHD is plain stupid. When there is a phone with QHD that performs like my 6s plus then you can call 1080p outdated. Apple will probably have the first QHD phone that acually has an SOC that can keep up with the GPU demanding POS that is QHD.....just sayin lol. For me the iPhone 6s Plus was the only logical choice when I decided to upgrade back in january. BTW there are only 4 android phones that have a better camera than the 6s plus and the OS being outdated??? that is up to the user I for one like it a lot. P.S. you can customize the home screen and background lol.

There are many phones with QHD that perform as fast as a 6s Plus some are faster doing certain tasks, while slower doing others. All are more than adequately fast. The higher resolution screens are definitely an advantage over HD ones, just look at a Samsung S6 or 7 screen next to any iPhone and the difference is very obvious. Apple fans are past masters of dismissing superior features over iPhones and those iPhones do not have, yet when Apple get them they suddenly become useful. You all lost credibility in this area years ago. Apple will probably have a QHD phone when others are moving on to better tech, that seems to be the trend nowadays. If you are an IOS user and into the Apple ecosytem it may be the logical choice. If you are looking to buy the best and most up-to-date phone then it would not be for sure. To few features and old tech in an outsized and heavy package for that. There are lot more than 4 Android phones with a better cameras, Samsung alone has more than that! Android on my phones are more up-to-date than IOS and when I get an update it is far more reliable than an IOS one. Getting a major OS update every year does not make it more up-to -date. I personally prefer a two year cycle over a one year one if I already have more functionality, my apps are updated at a fast rate to be inline with updates in the OS and the updates are stable and not liable to brick or slow my phone down. I can do a lot more than customize hone screens and background, much, much more. That is why my phone looks exactly as I want, is far easier and faster doing everyday tasks and much more useful than I could make an iPhone. Again iPhone fans like to discount the benefits of customization but know little of how useful and powerful it is.

this. i would rather get $300 Xiaomi Mi 5. it comes with similar specs too, why bother go $800 only for another Android smartphone? it runs the same OS, similar gimmicks, etc.

For one, this is the most nitpicky article I've come across in quite some time. Especially as someone who conversely seems to believe the iPhone is worth seven or eight hundred dollars, but the S7 isn't. I'm not saying you're wrong fot encouraging Samsung to improve their fingerprint scanner or calibrate the ambient light sensor a bit better... But claiming that these overall very minor things crater the value of the S7 Edge is something I can't agree with you on at all. I say that as someone who owns the 6s plus and the S7 Edge. This is even more obtuse, because it completely depends on how you are defining value which is largely subjective. I may think a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti's are worth their price tag, while you may think they're severely overpriced. Expensive is relative to who you're talking to, or what your criteria are. But I will concede there are a lot of fantastic phones you can get for less than $400. Secondly, the only reason more phone manufacturers don't charge higher prices for their devices is because they can't. If HTC, LG, or anyone else were able to increase their profit margins by charging more for their phones, they would do so. OEM's aren't selling their phones at cost, at a loss, or with razor-thin margins because they prefer it that way... it's because they don't have much of a choice due to the enormous flood of cheap devices (high powered or otherwise) that have pushed down the ASP's of smartphones. It's great for us as consumers, but it's terrible for manufacturers in the long run. Look at the PC market, perfect example. Look, I will certainly admit the S7 isn't for everyone, and for a lot of people there are less-expensive devices that will do everything they need. But I don't think that makes the S7 worth less.

You've explained it well. I always like reading your comments as you have a very balanced view and your explanations are very intelligent.

Some of you just need to accept that some people don't think it's worth it, I've been saying this for years. Ever since the Droid Charge released for $300. to upgrade, Sammy has been overcharging for their devices. Some of you don't care, and like all the stuff crammed in, etc. but many don't care for their bloated experience. People comparing to Apple is just useless, they are in their own world.

@LionStone "Some of you just need to accept that some people don't think it's worth it" - I've got no beef with those who think the S7 Edge is not worth it, because it's all about personal preference and opinion. "to upgrade, Sammy has been overcharging for their devices" - Other OEMs have overcharged too. Apple is a prime example. Heck, Apple overcharges even more than Samsung, while not even offering as much! "but many don't care of their bloated experiences" - Huh? Bloatware is 100% subjective; a feature I deem useful for me, might be a gimmick to you. "People comparing to Apple is just useless, they are in their own world" - WTF? In what world is Apple? Apple is just one of the many companies who make and sell devices. Apple is in the tech world just like Samsung and other OEMs. Wake up! There's no clue in your comment. Nothing you said invalidates anyone's point of view. You're entitled to your own point of view. But when you want to oppose people, make sure you've got something of value. smh

Just to tack onto this, because I deal with you entitled pricks all day long. An UPGRADE does NOT mean DISCOUNT, it means as the word implies, NEWER THAN PRESENT!

Keep in mind that this is an editorial with Ray's opinion, which mentions a few interesting points. It starts an interesting discussion about pricing. However, be certain that many other writers here (including myself) absolutely love the Galaxy S7 Edge and have more issues with other companies pricing (you know which ones).

You're paying for the Samsung brand, the ecosystem, and the billion dollar R&D investments into making the phone as powerful and beautifully designed as it is. That's why it's expensive.
