The tablet market in China has taught a lesson to producers like Samsung, Acer, Amazon and Google; these manufacturers have been so aggressive with pricing in the 7 inch tablet market in the country that China's white box producers have struck back with price cuts of their own to remain competitive. Sources from Channel retailers in the country agree that the white box manufacturers have been able to keep prices down by buying low priced, entry-level chips...

Many of my friends have bought these cheap Chinese/Indian tablets based on android. Most of them are crap. Some of them, surprisingly great for the price. Well that was until Nexus 7 came. For me at least. If you want a good cheap tablet, buy a Nexus 7. Its pretty affordable and is much much better than the cheap ones available.

There are 2 which I thought were great for the price. One was the Micromax funbook and the iball slide... 7 inchers ..don't remember the exact model of the iball.
Pretty decent performance I guess. Below 5k Ind rs ...I was happy with that performance.

You buy cheap you get cheap. I just bought a cheaply made Asus meemo pad 7 inch tablet with 4.1 android for $109 at Walmart for a 5 year old. Since its for a 5yr old I guess that makes it a smart purchase. Two months ago I gifted a nexus 7 2013 the builds are so different in feel and quality.

I beg to disagree.
Aside from my Nexus 7 2012, I have a $160 PiPo Max M1 rocking the ff:
running official 4.2.2
9.7" 1024x768 LG IPS display (not Innolux)
1.6Ghz dual-core A9 cpu (28nm)
16GB internal, with memory card slot
Aluminum shell (really great)
8000mah battery

That's what I call extreme value for money.
