In fairness all OEM's dictate some standard for their products. The good thing about following a standard is, when you stick to a single OEM, accessories and products tend to have a nice amount of seamless integration that you expect from a family of products. Every Samsung product I have ever owned since the Galaxy S have all use the same microUSB connector. They all use the same charger. They are all 100% interchangeable with their tablets and phones. Apple has this too. But chose to use cable sthat offered no benefit. Their 30 pin connector offered nothign that can't be done with microUSB. Apple has money and will make money. But this constant money milking schemes they keep doing will simply keep the vast majority away from their products. With sales slipping every year now, they can't afford to be resting on their laurels. We've seen what happens to company's that do.

Might as well. The entire industry is gearing up for USB-C, anyway. Even Apple's laptops use USB-C, but you need an adapter to plug your iphone into your Macbook. Crazy. Plus, this would open up the field to a lot more phone peripherals that were once Apple specific, due to the lightning connector.

When Tim Cook said the Anniversary iPhone would have the things, that we'd wonder how we lived without them, every one of those things will have been available on other platforms at ;least 3 years ago. Wireless charging no matter the form, requires that the source be plugged into an outlet. Why the ignorant fans were dogging wireless charging saying it is of no benefit, because you still have to plug something in, will do another 360. They are so happy Apple is goign to use an adaptation where you dont have to have your phone on a pad or surface. Something Qualcomm already has and bought and patented when they bought WiPower. The down side is, OTA charging has to be set for low emissions, which means it range will be short and also means the farther you are away the slower it will be. Apple's concept will be just some lame excuse to raise the iPhone cost $100 for some gimmicky useless BS, that others phone already had, that the sheep say are gimmicky and useless and will will do even less on an iPhone and yet they will love it. I can't wait for the Anniversary iPhone with Iris Scanner, wireless charging, faster charging and all those other things Android phones had for nearly 3~5 years. Apple needs to spend that cash horde, not raise cost for tech that is already old and has been proven to be awesome ideas and concepts. They need to stop being like the old video game company's of the 80's trying to milk consumers with lame meager yearly upgrades and actually make a great product worth buying. As successful as the iPhone has been and how successful the iPod was, with all the money they made, they shouldn't be 3 years behind ANYONE. Yet the fools keep making lame excuses like we don't need wireless charging or 2k+ displays...blah blah blah. But the fact is, you are still paying for it because other phone have it and cost the same as yours. Only a fool would pay the same price for a Toyota Camry that it would cost to but a Lexus.

Techie, either your world is very small to have these conclusions or you're just an idiot behind a keyboard. For example it matters SO EFFING MUCH if the "wireless" charging requires contact with a pad or can be charged across the room!!!! If Apple (or any brand) gives me a device that can charge across the room WIRELESSLY, or even a few feet where i can use it in bed while in my hand and charging - I would gladly pay an extra $100. And don't try to contrast Toyota and Lexus - they're exactly the same car!!! Comparing phones using Toyota and Lexus Would be more like comparing Samsung galaxy S models to their A series models. My iphone has a better ecosystem, support, and is faster, does more or better of what I need than android. Using your logic - you can have your extra 18 cup holders and interchangeable steering wheel, and I'll take better suspension and faster engine. And for effing sakes stop calling iPhone users sheep!!! It's stale... Cheers.

But what about the dongles they've been giving out with their iphone 7? It would essentially be useless. Their latest wired headphones would be useless (without a new dongle) Also, Apple with non-proprietary stuff on their iphone? Sounds like a paradox to me or impossible brainteaser to me.

Nothing to get work up over. Main thing it's reversable so don't have to worry about damaging connector. Not a problem for me but seen people screw up their micro USB ports. But wait till we're closer to release before believing PA on this.

It's about time! They should be banned in the EU if they don't start using international standards.

Make sure to put that in your picket sign, when you boycott them.

Apple just simply don't know how to copy Android without making seem that way, and i mentioned Android b/c all Android devices are going for the USB-C type port.

Ummmm.....Apple was the driving force behind the making of USB-C, so.....

The difference is Apple refused to wait for the USB-C to be ready and forced a change to the lightning to keep their own prioritized cable and profit off exclusive equipment. The same reason they won't switch to it now because they would lose $$$ without being able to copyright the connector

Just not a big enough deal to remotely matter.

I notice the usual suspect showed up with a bunch of False data. Calling people stupid again. Ugh. People can spend their money the way they see fit. No worse then hanging on to a recalled phone. It's their right. Good grief.

It shouldn't matter, except for accessories - headphones and such - because charging will soon be done without charging ports (I'm not fond of saying inductive charging is wirelessly, as I'm still waiting for long distance charging tech).

I speculate eventually they will indeed drop the lightning cable in favor of USB-C, however, they will throw in a very Apple twist, much like they did with the original Earpods. They will reverse polarity of their USB-C cables so that they aren't friendly with other industry-standard (non-Apple) devices.
