Verizon's Moto Z Play Droid is getting updated to Android 8.0 Oreo beginning today
The Motorola Moto Z Play Droid, which was a Verizon-only exclusive back in 2016, is receiving an update to Android 8.0 Oreo starting today. The software version is ODN27.76-12-30-2, and the update weighs in at a hefty 1.1GB. Before starting the updating process, Verizon asks you to connect to a Wi-Fi network, or a strong Verizon signal. The carrier also requests that you charge your battery fully before setting the wheels in motion.

Android 8.0 includes several new features including Picture-in-Picture, which allows you to view a video at the same time you are interacting with an app running in the background. Notification dots on the home screen show how many unread notifications you have to view for each app with a dot on its icon. A long press of the icon will reveal the notifications. Speaking of notifications, with Android 8.0 they can be snoozed, and will reappear later in the order of importance. A complete changelist can be found by clicking on the sourcelink.

After updating the phone, you should find apps and games running faster and smoother, and audio running over a Bluetooth wireless speaker will sound better. Battery life will be improved, and the update will also exterminate some bugs and make the phone more stable. Users will notice a new interface when receiving a call. The new OS build also includes an updated Android security patch and improved Wi-Fi connectivity.

The update is being sent out in waves, which means it might take a few days before it reaches your Moto Z Play Droid. You can try to receive it manually by heading to the Settings menu and clicking on Software update.
