Verizon version of Samsung Galaxy S III shows up on Nenamark Benchmark site

0. phoneArena posted on 12 May 2012, 20:02

The Verizon variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III was found on the Nenamark Benchmark web site on Friday; the model number of the device was the SCH-I535 and the 1.5GHz CPU sounds like the S4 as does the Adreno 225 in the role of GPU...

Seems like you got a chip on your shoulder bro, go find a girlfriend or something, there's no need to be this mad, stop hating on greatness. Here let me spell it out for you SGS 3 > iPhone 4s and whatever they call the new one in October.

lol at fanboy, so when a test show the mali getting beat it is wrong but when a test show the mali is faster then it is the right one?
It is funny because of the fanboy think this is a good benchmark test, is a good way to test the GPU. Remixfa has stated that is was a good test, why are you changing it now?

I hope AT&T does support this phone and that it"s not another Galaxy Nexis deal where the unsupported GSM version is our only alternative. I would even initiate insurance on this baby.

Like we didnt know that this was coming lol??? we all know that 3 if not all 4 of the major carriers are going to have a variant of this phone. its a good option for those that are looking to turn away from iOS or WIndows.

personally theres not much difference between this phone and the Note, but people are going to get this phone because is too too big like Note

@remixfa, okay, seriously I think you have some issues with absolute Samsung fanboyism and hatred towards Qualcomm. I mean WTF?
a ) Anandtech? find me anyone there talking anything bad about the s4.
You? You keep up with statements like piss poor crapdragon.
b) find me an exact part where Mali in sgsII is stated to be better than adreno 225
c) wanna have a bet?
I bet you adreno 320 will be in a phone this year.

as for games, are you blind? you'll spit out anything just to defend samsung..are you telling me you won't be able to closely look at 4.8inch of HD screen and distinguish some graphics beyond ps3/xbox360 level?
by that logic, all console games should stay the same in the future!
anyway the point is, graphics will, by nature of things, advance rapidly in the next two years when adreno 3xx/powerVR series6/Mali t6xx/Kepler mobile GPU's became standard in phones. they will be developed to meet that power and current Mali 400 just can't get there, not by a long shot.

he may be a little Samsung biased but he's not wrong so i wouldn't say it's a hatred and besides Qualcomm does do consistently bad in comparison to the rest of the mobile processor crowd.

the S4 is certainly a powerful chipset that much is obvious however when you look at what Samsung and Texas Instruments are offering for this generation of Smartphones & Tablets this S4 is quite underwhelming which is usually the case with Qualcomm and even Nvidia. they'll always be the first to start off the next generation of chipsets and they're impressive for a minute or two if you're Nvidia and made the smart move to partner with a manufacturer for a really early launch like they did with the Transformer Prime in the Holidays but the S4 has only come in time to witness the Android King's return to the throne and OMAP5 devices are soon to follow which will be even more powerful than the Galaxy SIII like Moto's next flagship crop i believe like the Atrix 3, the Droid Razr MAXX HD and the Photon Q 4G LTE and not only that but Qualcomm is having serious delays for their 28nm Kraits so whatever they had planned to get them out of this cycle they're in is looking to likely fail due to this.

you know console graphics aren't changing anytime soon right? console sales may have taken a good drop but even if Microsoft & Sony started developing new consoles now they wouldn't be finished in under a year or even two. the Wii U is coming out but it's only comparable at best to current gen consoles from their competitors in the graphics department.

so by that logic how does that make him wrong about anything? those GPUs will beat out the Adreno 225 just as easily, in fact even the OMAP5 & it's SGX544(MP?*) will turn both the current S4 and the Exynos 4212 into complete embarrassments but for now and in the very, very near future Qualcomm will be dominated by both Samsung and Texas Instruments.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5811/samsung-galaxy- s-iii-preview

there's your proof by the way.

*i don't think there's a solid source on how many graphics cores TI will be using with the SGX544 in the OMAP5. it'll either be 2 like the 4S and iPad 2 or 4 like the new iPad.

lol, thanks. :)

I am no samsung fanboy. I am a fan of tech. I think I've made that abundantly clear though. For now, samsung is where its at... the moment that changes, is the moment I buy something else.

I would hope at this point, that the Note2 drops with an A15 and new GPU after the Tablet launch with A15. Unless the OMAP5 has really just fallen apart, thats going to be what they need to stay competitive. It still irks me that Texas Instruments has been so quiet compared to everyone else. Either they are waiting for the SGS3 limelight to die down to be able to take center stage.. or they are having issues.

The Qualcomm defenders league can hate me all they want, but unless they strike gold with the "Pro" AND it launches in phones before tablets (sooner rather than later), the S4 series is going to be swept under the rug and forgotten. Between the lower than SGS3 by a good margin benchmarks on most tests, and their supply problems, its not looking to be a good year.
Nvidia needs to do something as well. Hopefully their T3+ is enough of a change up to at least put them back on par with the Exynos 4412 if not surpass it by a bit.

So, pretty much everything we predicted is coming true for now. How the Hauwaii chip and the OMAP5 shake the game up is still anyones guess.

no problemo, you know i just stand for what's right. xD

yeah, the OMAP5 could really change the game being the only SoC with ARM-Cortex A15 cores and LTE support. hopefully it's not been delayed and i wish there was time for that to be in the US versions of the Galaxy SIII then we would have a reason to cheer. -.-

I would be excited for an OMAP5, but I could not cheer for it to be in the SGS3. High end galaxy phones are samsung's pinnacle achievement for their tech. It feels dirty to have something else in there. Much like Moto uses OMAPs for their high end and HTC for some odd reason uses Crapdragons.

Of course, I would happily have an OMAP5 in there if the choice were between that and an S4.. Thats just insulting. lolol.

Have you heard anything about the 5250 (or anything non-qualcomm) playing nice with american LTE?

I dont want LTE. Im happy with HSPA+ for now. I want the best chips, not the fastest radios darn it!! (stomps feet like a petulant child)

well the OMAP5 of course but i'm not sure about the 5250. at the very least it should have a separate modemn if Samsung has any smarts.

well i guess at this point you should start importing.

1) http://www.anandtech.com/show/5810/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-performance-preview

The info is right in front of your face, should you choose to learn to read. Its not fanboy, its fact.

Anandtech never trashes anything unless its absolutely horrid. They leave the user to decide what they want to get.

3) sure. What would ya like to bet? I'm always game for a wager. I hope you pay up better than your buddy Taco did though.

As for games, mobile devices and a 60 inch flatscreen are not the same thing. OF COURSE games will continue to look better in both mobile and home entertainment. But there will come a point where you just cant tell anymore on that little screen. Diminishing returns and Moores Law. Look it up. Developers will then take that extra horsepower and put it towards physics, AI, and everything else to improve the game. Its already happening on the "next" generation of consoles. The graphical leaps are there but they are much smaller than the previous generation's graphical leaps, which were smaller than the ones before that. They are concentrating on improving everything else now.
I cant possibly be the only one that actually pays attention to things.

It's truly incredible how you constantly make an irony out of your self.
I should learn to read and pay attention?
Let's try again:

1) " Adreno 225 can't hold a candle to Mali 400 in Galaxy SII" (NOT SGSIII)
that is from your mouth, and i was just pointing it out. just how low can you go in your fanboyism?

2) go look some high end PC gameplay on you tube over your phone.. then watch some ps3 title as well..notice any difference in graphics? It should be easy, even while watching on your SGS1.
do you even realize that a 4.8 inch HD screen held in front of your face looks as big and sharp as a full HD 50 inch tv from 3m distance?

3) @kingkurogi - don't twist my words, i was talking about future. when consoles get a 10 x more processing power with their next generation will the game graphics remain the same? OF COURSE NOT.
it's the rule of gaming tech, hardware and graphics always follow one another.
so when the next generation of phone GPU becomes a high end standard(during next 2 years), the games will develop accordingly.
and we're talking about more than twice the graphic power of xbox360/ps3, at the very least!
just imagine iphone 6 with Rogue GPU - top games like infinity blade 4, NOVA 4/5 etc will be way out of reach of this mali 400 in SGS II.
and that's where remix was clearly wrong, saying that mali 400 is fine for playing everything within next two years - it is WAY off actually.

as for Krait PRO/Quad variants - my bet is still on offer.
i say we'll see them in phones this year.
OMAP 5 will probably be there too, but it will have inferior GPU(SGX 544MP2- still a beast with 530Mhz clock speed-it should be about 50percent faster than SGX543MP4 - but not a match for adreno320, which should be 3-5 times faster than adreno 225).
and exynos 5- highly doubt it will be out this year.
so we'll see who takes the overall SoC crown in 2012 - snapdragon shortages shouldn't affect the high end chips as much as the mass market current S4 IMO

xD well i don't know man. i guess we'll just have to wait for two years to pass to really see what game developers actually DO with the extra power because to be honest Xbox 360 graphics are still quite nice and it's using a what? a...five year old gpu? yet it still sets a golden standard. i think that says something right there.

well wouldn't that just be an ideal scenario but this is reality and you're forgetting a couple of factors here. one Qualcomm is facing delays, that's a fact. OEMS have had to delay launches for their devices because of this. Qualcomm CAN'T simply ignore that because they want to get their better chipsets out there and if those OEMs decided to switch to any of the newer variants they'll face even further delays optimizing the new chipset. VERY same thing happened with the Droid Bionic. it came out nearly a year later than it was supposd to. also sales will affect Qualcomms progress as well because say for instance the Galaxy SIII comes to the States on three carriers with the current S4 like it's projected to to be able to meet their summer launch window. the more it sells the more demand they'll have to meet and Qualcomm will literally have their hands full if they're having as much trouble as it's been said they're having. i can about promise you that there will be no Quads this year and if there is a Pro it might could eek out in time for the Holidays. two, you're assuming that the OMAP5 will use a dual-core gpu configuration when it very well could be a quad-core configuration. TI hasn't specified yet. if you're going to come in here and paint scenarios for us don't create the worst case one for TI because it suits your claims better. the fact of the matter is you just don't know.

okay, first, to clear out the obvious - console game graphics are staling becaause..they are running on the basically same processors for 5 years now?
it's that simple.

now, about the rest - don't make me into a Qualcomm supporter here.
i couldn't care less about the brand behind the chip-
i WANT OMAP 5 or EXYNOS 5 to be released ASAP.
if they manage that before Snapdragon Quad/Pro - great, because i will happily buy whatever comes out first.
as for the SGX544..well i don't know exactly what kind of design it is.. it could very well be the MP4 configuration. but i'm just using the only source mentioning it - wikipedia, and it says it's "MP2".
however it's performance sounds pretty wild, possibly even better than an SGX543MP4 clocked up to 530Mhz.

you know, in your reply to me, you didnt point out a fact.. you just replied to my reply about you calling me a fanboy without facts.... by calling me a fanboy again.

2) there is a huge huge huge difference in whats going on in a high end PC and a high end cellphone. We are getting to 360/PS3 levels in our phones.. in the next generation.. the true A15's, not this S4 wannabe. But PCs are 5+ years ahead of consoles. What an Xbox does at full load a PC running a Gforce 680 can do without breaking a sweat.
Please dont be foolish enough to compare a phone to a high end PC.

3) console vs phone gaming: Console games are always going to be more detailed and deeper. The return on investment is much much higher when you sell 1 million xbox games vs 1 million iOS/android downloads. They are not in the same league. Are handheld games going to look great? yea absolutely.. are they ever going to be on par with "current" consoles? That I doubt.
Ask yourself, would you rather spend 30-50 hours playing a console game or a handheld game?

When we get to the point where the phone can wirelessly sync to your big screen, and the phone becomes a controller of sorts, then we will see bigger development, but there is a definite cap on money spent on handheld games due to the lower ROI. Rovio and a few others are the exceptions. The console couldnt exist if it ran on "exceptions" to the rule.

Samsung themselves said the 5250 will be out in the 2nd half of the year. So I'd put a lot of stock in that. They are not having massive supply problems like Qualcomm is, so they may beat them to the punch.

Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for much of anything. Especially regarding unconfirmed rumors.

S4 shortages are S4 shortages. Its the same chip in the regular or Pro with a different GPU. If they cant fabricate the chip for one fast enough, its not going to magically be all better for the other.

you want to "imagine" the future. I'm commenting on whats happening RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW the choice is between an S4 or a 4412. The clear winner for the best performance for 2 years is the 4412. Everything that is coming out in 2013 is going to massively blow away this year's crop, so thats not even a point of contention. But again, we are talking RIGHT NOW.

BTW, the next iphone is going to continue to use the A5X chip that is in the new ipad2 and ipad3... its not going to be a huge change. I dont know where you got your info on some imaginary super mega chip that apple is coming out with.

It really seems like your splitting hairs just to split them.

what i find funny is how you say this, and not realize that he never says blatantly biased things like you..go back and trace my first reply to you here and you'll get my "personal little bias".
i have nothing against you personally but every once in a while you lash out with something outlandish, like "adreno 225 can't hold a candle to mali400 in SGSII"
why are you doing it?
actually i respect you as a poster with knowledge and intellect, and that's why i have a gripe against your bias.

and it seems that i always make my self not clear enough in my responses, so okay, my bad on that part.

i wasn't trying to compare a phone to a high end PC of course..i was pointing out an obvious flaw in your theory that you couldn't tell a difference in graphics after a certain point, on a phone screen.
get it now?

and i think you are very underestimating the whole mobile gaming, btw.
it has a HUGE potential.
here's my view - ROI on mobile games will actually turn massive in the future.
think about it, lets look at projections for the near future- there could be around 500 million of highly capable gaming smartphones out there in 2-3 years.
there's already a billion of smartphones in use!

now is it unreasonable to expect from a high end, well known mobile game to sell on 50 million of those?
that's a huge business already.
even now, it's possible to sell a serious, expensive game like N.O.V.A.3 for just 7 bucks, and make serious money on it because of the sheer size of the mobile user base.
In the long term, the company appears to be in an ideal position to benefit from the rapid growth of the digital distribution of video games on mobile phones, tablets, next-generation set-top boxes and smart TVs."

..that's from Gameloft, the biggest mobile game studio, and one of the largest game studios in the world actually. and they financial performance is clearly indicative:

you mistake my intent on mobile gaming. you have a few stand out titles in a sea of literally hundreds of thousands of games. Small botique developers can live quite well like that. Mobile games dont take nearly the $$$ to develop that a console game does. One of the most popular and money making franchises on mobile is Angry birds. One of the most popular and money making franchises on consoles is Halo. They couldnt make 1 Halo game for all the development of all the Angry birds games combined. Bungie makes billions, rovio makes millions. Bungie would be out of business if they made what Rovio does. Console gaming is much more expensive to make, test, advertise, and sell compared to mobile games. If the console list of games was 100s of thousands with only a few stand out titles, console games wouldnt exist because no one would be making money except for a a small few. The ability for development studios to live off much smaller returns in mobile is also why mobile games are much more... open to new ideas.. than console games which must make millions of dollars per release.

They play in 2 different leagues. That is my point. Mobile gaming will expand exponentially for sure.

There is a law of diminishing returns. There is going to come a point when you literally cant see the difference in detail, especially at lower screen sizes. Its like the difference in Pentile vs RGB. Most people, including myself cant really see the difference, but we know there is 1/3rd less pixels in pentile.

Look at these 2 links. One is a straight slideshow comparison between GPUs. On paper, the Mali sucks. Its one of the worst of the bunch when compared to the 225 and Apple's PowerVR. According to that, the T3's GPU should suck also.

Yet when you get to the benchmarks in the next link.. which i believe is just a repost of the Anandtech links, the Mali with a slight up clock MAULS them. Even the T3 manages to out perform the Adreno 225... while both are pushing a much higher resolution and pixel density than the 225.
And again, on paper, the 225 should be king of the hill to everything but the PowerVR. But its not. For some reason Adrenos have yet to look as good in real life as they do on paper.

Hense, MY feeling is that they suck. Maybe that sounds harsh, but like ive mentioned a dozen times, I judge based on comparison. My views are plain, fair, and from obvious sources.

I dont have any bias towards one manufacturer or another. Ive bought 1 samsung device in my entire life. Dozens of motos, htcs, LGs, and others.. but ive only bought 1 samsung. Yet, you and others keep trying to call me a giant samsung fanboy. Why? Because you dont like my obvious opinion on Crapdragons and Adrenos and where they belong.

Whats really funny is that i constantly ride samsung on their lackluster software, their update issues, and other things and all that falls on deaf ears.. but when I dare make a FACT supported statement against another manufacturer that someone else has an OBVIOUS leaning towards, IM the fanboy. Guess what, if your getting upset because someone said something negative about a brand, its not me thats the fanboy.

I dont need to continually justify my stance. It is 100% evidence supported. Obviously, im not the only one that has similar views which is why King is trying to tell you basically the same things.

When someone else comes a long and makes better hardware and screens than samsung, u will see me with their products. I only spend my money on what I feel is the best, and for right now through the forseeable future, that IS Samsung's high end lines. Im not concerned with looks as long as its not butt ugly, as all my phones get cases anyways. I am concerned with top notch hardware hand hacking ability for when I'm bored. Samsung rules the roost in both those areas for the moment.

well you call it stalling but there's not really a dire need for graphics enhancements. i mean both Sony and Microsoft have put off making next gen consoles because their current gen was still selling so well.

this is TI's layout for the OMAP5430. they specifically don't specify how many graphics cores it uses.

it's pretty mouth watering performance i must say.

TI lists the POWERVRâ„¢ SGX544-MPx as the one coming with Omap5.

As far as I can find its pretty much the same chip that is in the new ipad with maybe some minor differences. If thats true, it definitely wont be a slouch. It may not maul all of competition, but it will definitely kill everything that isnt an Exynos. It will be interesting to see how the OMAP5 and 5250 stack up against each other. TI is definitely bringing some heat with this.. now it just needs to launch the darn thing! :)

I would assume at least the quad core like the ipad3 runs, but we can always hope for an octo surprise. :)

right, the x means it could either be 2 cores or 4 cores. the MP part of the name is what specifies how many graphics cores it uses. the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 uses the SGX543(MP2) dual-core gpu and the new iPad uses the SGX543(MP4) quad-core gpu.

that explains a little about the SGX544.

well not any ARM Cortex-15 Exynos SoCs anyway. my god, an octo PowerVR surprise you say? that would be too godly! o:

In all my years with Verizon, I have only once seen them get their own version of a Samsung phone, and make it better than the overseas version. That was the Omnia II. It had all the same tech specs, but added really nice stereo speakers. Well, they did limit internal storage to 8gb, while the overseas did have 16gb versions.

I hope VZW can repeat that with the SGSIII. Keep the powerful hardware, but add something that makes it special. (and, no VZW, VZNavigator does not make it special)
