Update for Gmail rolling out to Android users today

Gmail is getting a face lift today (Wednesday), according to the email application's Google+ account; the update brings a new cleaner design to the conversation view and with multiple message selection, you can take action on a large number of emails at one time. And to prevent a situation where you accidentally miss receiving an important email message...

Did they add the ability to empty the trash folder like on the iOS version yet?

That ability has been there for a while now (since the last update or one before that). Just go into Trash and hit the menu button or 3 dots icon and it'll have empty trash option.

Another "update"? Google is getting just about as bad as Facebook with changing things around. Why can't they leave well enough alone?

I don't think anyone is forcing the update on you. Just don't update it, and all will be well in the land.

So far the last updates made GMail very usable and getting close to the desktop versions. Hopefully this update will be as good as the last one. Now Google Search results on the other hand...

It's getting close to a roll out of the new Android version so this makes sense.
