Update: Reddit (finally) launches an official app

Update: Reddit has just launched the app - available for both iOS and Android, you can find the download links below, just north of the screenshots gallery! Anyone who downloads the app during launch week will get three months of Reddit gold for free!

Reddit is a popular, decade-old social network, home to communities with all sorts of different interests. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, it still doesn't have an official smartphone app for any mobile operating system. The closest thing to that is Alien Blue for iOS – a formerly 3rd party Reddit-browsing app, which was actually bought by Reddit down the road.

Well, it seems that, finally, this may change. The company has just posted a teaser image on its official Facebook page, promising “Reddit for your thumbs, coming soon to iOS and Android”. The image's caption further states inline images, theme support, and simpler navigation.

So, it sounds Reddit has been hard at work to create a seamless experience for its mobile app. Seeing as both the App Store and Play Store are currently flooded with Reddit clients, some of which are really, really good, the official app will definitely find itself in some tough proving grounds. We've already seen screenshots from the beta build of the app, though, it's safe to say that these are hardly to be considered final.

Would you be willing to give the official Reddit app a try, or have you found a 3rd party reader, which you are perfectly happy with?

Relay is hands down the best reddit client I've used. It's difficult to see how they can improve on that. But still, cool!

I installed from the apk It's a decent start, but lacks so many features and is slower than Relay e.g. comment navigation buttons, auto night mode, not many animations, no way to open links in third party browser it gives you 3 months Gold, which is pretty nice

Have you guys used "Karma Machine for Reddit"? If you're on Android (not sure if on iOS), it is by far the most gorgeous client ever - the animations and colours are amazing

Never heard of it but I'll give it a shot, thanks.

Yep, best looking Reddit app I've ever tried Also Karma Machine's gestures are awesome But it was in quite stages when I tried it, didn't support gfycats

That's surprising. I'm assuming that's an incentive to get people to switch from the clients they're currently using. Does it kick in after a certain time period, or is it immediate? And does that cancel if you use another client?

It immediately kicks in, I also got a PM saying thanks for helping test it Nope, doesn't get cancelled, I'm logged into 4 different Reddit apps on my Nexus 5, another few more on my desktop, laptop and iPad BTW there's no iPad version

Yeah, I saw that :/ Kind of a bummer. But still, thank you for letting me know all that; I appreciate that my friend. And wooo! Free gold! The best kind of gold.

Is this app just as bad as the reddit website?
