Unlocked Motorola Moto Z receives update to Android Oreo in the U.S.

Those in the U.S. sporting the unlocked Motorola Moto Z (XT1650-03) are beginning to receive Android 8.0 at long last. The phone received the update in Brazil back in March, and earlier this month a small number of stateside Moto Z owners had their unit updated. Others used a workaround to manually update their Moto Z, but this required the bootloader to be unlocked.

The 1.4GB update is now rolling out OTA to those unlocked Moto Z units in the U.S. that did not receive it earlier in May. That would mean that a huge percentage of those toting this model are anxiously awaiting the notification telling them that Oreo has finally landed.

One new feature included with Android 8.0 is picture-in-picture, which allows users to watch video while still interacting with an app running in the background. The update also brings notification channels, new emoji, and notification dots. The latter appears on the icon of an app when you have an unread notification related to it. Motorola is tossing in the March Android security patch, stability improvements and bug fixes.

When the update arrives, you should do two things before starting the updating process; make sure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, and charge your battery to 100%. Because the update is sent OTA, it might take a few days before you receive it. If you're impatient (and frankly, we can't blame you if you are), you can try to manually download and install the update by going to Settings > About phone > Software update > Check for updates.
