This Essential Phone scratch and bend test reveals the toughness of titanium and ceramic

Priced at $699, the Essential Phone is more than just another high-end handset - thanks to its design and the rather rare materials that it's made of, including titanium and ceramic. As it turns out, these materials make the phone tougher than most of its competitors.

The scratch and bend test seen in the video below shows that the Essential Phone is seriously well built. The entire front of the device (camera included) is covered by Gorilla Glass 5 - this puts it on par with the likes of Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S8. In other words, the handset's front won't get scratched by keys, coins, or other similar objects that you may be carrying in your pocket.

The back of the Essential Phone is made out of ceramic, which is even harder to scratch than Gorilla Glass 5 - only super-tough minerals like topaz or diamond can leave marks on it. However, the rear camera is covered in Gorilla Glass 5, while the LED flash next to it is protected only by plastic (which is quite easy to scratch).

As for the edges of the Essential Phone, these are made out of titanium with a bit of special plastic on one side. Titanium is harder to scratch than aluminum, while also making the Essential Phone nearly impossible to bend, at least in normal scenarios.

All in all, it's good to see that, at least when it comes to build quality, the Essential Phone is worth its price.
