The foldable Motorola Razr looks incredible in these leaked renders

A blast from the past... And the future

As expected, the Motorola Razr (2019) ditches the physical button layout and small screen found on the original in favor of a modern 6.2-inch display. This stretches from top to bottom thanks to its 22:9 aspect ratio but, due to the smartphone’s unique shape and form factor, the edge-to-edge panel is forced to adopt some rather unique angles. The wide notch that is present above doesn't help with this, either. 

Keeping things in line with 2004’s RAZR V3, the foldable edition sports a huge chin below the display. But rather than laying flush against the display as is common these days, the chin actually represents a rather large bulge which matches the thickness of the Motorola Razr when folded shut. While on the topic of the bulge, it’s worth pointing out that it’s home to a large speaker which, combined with the in-ear alternative, will presumably work as part of a stereo speaker setup.

The Motorola Razr’s display shows no sign of a crease in today’s renders. However, as Samsung and Huawei showed us with their foldable offerings, this certainly isn't a guarantee that one won’t be present on Motorola's device. 

The secondary display could prove extremely useful

Taking a look at the external area, the lower portion of the smartphone isn't anything interesting – it simply houses the Motorola logo. The upper area, on the other hand, is where things start to get interesting.

Although the renders don't clearly show it –  the artificial lighting make its hard to see – the upper portion is expected to house a small secondary display that’ll support a range of unique features through various pre-installed apps such as Moto Display, Moto Actions, and Moto Camera.

Regarding the camera app, it's first worth pointing out that the Motorola Razr doesn’t include a front-facing sensor. This means that selfie fans will have to rely on the secondary display and accompanying camera for the popular functionality.

Like most modern smartphones, the Motorola Razr's camera app will include a button that switches over to selfies. When pressed, what the sensor can see will automatically be displayed on the smaller external screen. In order to actually take the photo, users simply need to tap on the larger display with their fingers. Alternatively, sliding a finger along the display will zoom in or out. It’s also suggested that a timer can be displayed on the exterior screen if necessary. 

In addition to these camera functionalities, rumor has it the Moto Display app will show push notifications and other useful information such as the time and weather on the external screen. Controlling media content through small widgets should be possible too. It's currently unclear what benefits the Moto Actions app will introduce.

Another unrelated feature comes when using the larger screen on the smartphone. Apparently, Motorola's software will give users the option of running their finger over the external display in order to scroll through webpages or certain apps.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X that precede it, the Motorola Razr was expected to carry one of the latest flagship processors. However, recent findings by XDA Developers have revealed that the device may actually sport the less powerful Snapdragon 710.

Apparently, this chip will be accompanied by the choice of two internal storage configurations. The first and also cheapest alternative looks set to include 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. However, a version with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM should also be available for those of you out there looking for a little extra.

Unsurprisingly, the Motorola Razr will likely ship with Android 9 Pie straight out of the box and Motorola's minimal overlay. This will be paired with a small 2,730mAh battery and the company's 27W TurboPower fast charging tech. Ultimately, it'll remain to be seen what the smartphone's battery life is like, but with such a small cell it could struggle a little.

From the look of today's renders, the Motorola Razr will ship with a braided USB-C cable and a pair of USB-C headphones that also sport a braided cable. Alongside these elements, the renders show the fast charger that was mentioned above and a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter, suggesting the Motorola Razr won't carry the popular port.

Elsewhere inside the box, the usual instructions manual is to be expected alongside what appears to be a specially-designed stand. It's unclear at this point if it serves any purpose as an accessory, or if it's simply part of the unboxing experience.
