The Verizon-exclusive Asus ZenFone AR might be be launching in the U.S. tomorrow

By now, the Asus ZenFone AR has attained something a somewhat mythical status: we've seen its announcement, some of us have even held it in their own hands, and still the darned thing is yet to get a release anywhere in the world (though pre-orders are currently live in the U.K.). However, a new rumor claims that not only is the device coming out soon, but it's doing so tomorrow, August 3rd.

The news comes from The Android Report, the same source who leaked the alleged cases for the device the other day, and comes accompanied by a picture of the device's packaging (seen above) — meaning there's a fair chance this rumor is actually the real deal.

Launch delays are all Asus seems to be about these days, though: the ZenFone AR was expected to come out in the U.S. last month, following its unveiling all the way back in January at this year's CES, while the company's upcoming ZenFone 4 line will be launching later this month, four months after it was initially scheduled to. Still, missing the launch window by three days won't be such a big deal, unless the rumored launch actually turns out to be the start of pre-orders.

As for why this is exciting news, the answer is simple: the ZenFone AR is actually a pretty interesting device, as it's the second phone ever to support Google's Tango augmented reality platform, as well as the first one to do so while also being compatible with the Google Daydream virtual reality platform. And while its AR abilities will most probably be overlooked thanks to Apple's recent interest in the field, it will be interesting to see how the two competing platforms will fare against each other.

We're expecting to see the ZenFone AR cost no more than $800 stateside, as confirmed by its UK price tag of £799. As per previous announcements, the device will be also be Verizon exclusive.

Thanks for the tip!
