The 5-inch smartphone: is this the end of the screen size race?

Give people a phone with a 3.5-inch display in 2007 and you’d hear oohs and aahs about how big that display is. From then on, every year it’s the same story over and over again…

I have no problem with 5" as long as phone size dnt get bigger...example look at the xperia zl which has a 5" sxreen but ia actually smaller than the 4.8" shows we dont have to sacrifice size for larger screen .

Like I said the xperia zl gives us hope that even though screens are getting bigger the phone itself doesn't have to... I hope the s4 will remain the same size as the s3 or smaller but with a larger screen cause am with you cause I don't want phones to get any bigger... For me the s3 is the limit though lol I did say the s2 was the limit and before that I said the iphone 4 was the limit... But am sure the s3 is the biggest ill go as I played with the note 2 and for me that's too big.

no, I'm just going to take an LCD TV and put it up to my face and make calls with it. I didnt go for the note/note2 because it was too big to one hand... If you were capable of reading the rest of the threads, we've been talking about perfect phone dimensions.

many people including myself rarely ever use the phone as a phone call device, thus how we "look while holding it to our ears" is a pretty moot point. I might use 10 minutes a month on average and thats because not all of my relatives are smart enough to text me. lol.

There must be a lot of idiots then... Considering Note and Note 2 has sold quite well. For some reason I don't notice those idiots....

Well, I felt that the 4.8-inch display on the S3 wasn't enough for watching videos, internet browsing, emails reading, and the occasional games playing. Plus, I'm always gonna be worried that the battery running out while traveling, and I will be looking for a PHONE to use. Mentioning the above reasons, I sold out my Galaxy S3 (although it was the best phone iv'e ever had), bought a nokia C2-05, and accompanied it with a Samsung Galaxy tab 7.0 plus. that's how I can enjoy the Android experience, and stay connected all time.

and they just came out with the extended battery ;/ Sad that you did that, since you got a samsung tablet as well, you could have airstreamed data/video/ect back n forth between the two in the background. I used to stream a movie from my phone to the tablet (wirelessly) while still playing angry birds on my SGS1 at the same time. Why? because the option was there and I liked making iOS users jealous! lol.

I like a big screen, the Note and Note 2 were no problem for me to hold, talk on, put in my pocket, or use one handed. I am very interested in a 6.1 screen it would make it easier to browse the web, read/review docs, write memos/notes, draw diagrams/pictures/maps, edit blueprints/autocad, read books,/mags/news papers, being able to do all this on one device is great I always have my phone on me unlike my tablet wich is at home and most of the time I use my computer there since I have a 30inch monitor so a 6inch phone is not ridiculous. My dream Phone would be a 6.1 inch screen, slim bezel, onscreen buttons, 400+ ppi, 1920x1080, micro sd card slot, smart stylus, and Google nexus like updates to OS.

You must have the biggest hands in the world! I had a Note 2 (briefly) and it was most definitely a 2 handed device for me, which rendered it unusable as a phone in my books. Content looks great on big screened phones, but the tradeoff is the size of the device. Typically, I think most people make a compromise somewhere between the 2.

yep, I use my 7 inch tablet far more than my tine 4'3" droid razr screen. Next phone, I get will have at least a 5 inch display. If I can hold a Nexus 7 in one hand, then any smartphone around 5 - 5.5 inches will be fine for me.

No, it's not! In a few yers I think we'll see that "normal" phones, not phablets, that are about 6".

People complaining about phones screens getting larger, sheesh. It's just called options and you buy what you like, who cares if you like tiny phones that make you look like a gorilla trying to peel a grape or a gargantuan phone that makes you look like Tom Thumb when you need a step ladder to reach the power button. All about choices, if the giant phones don't sell then manufacturers will get the picture that the majority don't want them bigger than their heads. I am an owner of the DNA I'm a 6ft 190lbs and I only find the phone tall and I love the screen it is so sharp and clear and I'm around some of the best phones out there now, the iPhone 5/4, Droid Razr Maxx HD, Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S3. 1080p screen makes a serious difference when you read text, watch videos or pretty much viewing anything. 1080p contrary to what other people think might not be necessary but believe you me once you view it and realize how crisp and sharp and detailed everything looks, you'd be hard pressed to say otherwise. What I find incredibly odd is the fact that people buy phones based on looks only to shove the damn thing in an otterbox case, whats the point of the looks then? My phone is case free since I bought it and also it's screen protector free(what a crock?), those things are even worse, why have a screen that's scratch resistant and you have to buy more protection for it, kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

This is yet another dumb article. Who died and made Victor the phone industry visionary?? I remember when 3.7" phones were the rage.. 4.3 came along and it was OMG.. that's TOO BIG!! no way! Never! That can't last! Well, 4.3 settled in for a while, then it was 4.5, 4.65 and on.. I don't know where things will settle. it just may be that people will get sick of 5" phones and we'll go back to 1080p 4.3" phones or 4". Who knows! i know that I LOVE my Note 2 and the huge screen. In fact.. if they come out with a Note 3 with a bigger screen and slightly bigger chassis. YES, I'll run to buy it. Not everyone will though, and that's ok. And as far as the move to 1080p tech goes, from 720p.. Victor, have you even ever looked at the displays side by side? If you had, there's NO way you could sit there and say that you cannot perceive a difference between 1080 and 720 at the 5" size. I went to the verizon store and checked out the DNA.. that screen is AMAZING. I absolutely noticed a difference with the 1080 screen. The text was sharper. No question about it. it was amazing. Enough to convert me from my Note? No way. But.. I'd love for my phone to have 1080p resolution. To say there is no difference is insane. The take away here is. we don't know what's going to happen. I believe that it will be the chassis size that dictates how big we go. THere will reach a point where people just don't want anything bigger chassis wise. Then we'll stuff as big of a screen in that phone as possible. I want a 6" note 3 or 4 with chassis size very similar to what it is now.. that would be heaven in the hand. :)

I love the opening sentence and how it's solidly backed up by your experience. Probably it won't matter to you what experts say, but let's try: if you have average 20/20 vision, at around one foot, your eye will not be able to make a difference when the pixel density goes above around 320ppi, so that 441ppi on a 5-inch 1080p display is of no real benefit in most common scenarios, experts say and you can do the digging. Hey, but those are just the facts!

I truly believe what you're saying here. 441 ppi is just too much. I could even consider it a gimmick. We can say, hey, it's crispier and sharper than other devices bla bla bla. But the truth is, it won't really have that much of an effect. The pixel density is overrated. We can always say that the higher the ppi, the better, but we should always remember that it's not all about the ppi. We don't have the ability to perceive microscopic things.

a fun test for PA would be to take the nexus4, OneX or some other 720p high end screen vs the HTC DNA out on the street for some random people's opinions on which is better. However do part of the test saying that the HTC is 1080p, and another part of the test saying the OneX is 1080p and the HTC is 720p, and the last part letting people guess which display looks better. See how many times people say the HTC really is the nicer set in all 3 scenarios.

I'm an android guy but the comments on this website are so android biased that it's just ridiculous. I don't need to give out my body measurements to state that IN MY OPINION I think 4.3 or 4.5 is big enough, I have the GS3 that I love but it's too big.

I have the Note; which i feel is very comfortable. The only gawks i (still!) get is when I'm using it in my hands; as I rarely actually make calls. But, look how ridiculous ppl look when walking around with a tablet! Nothing looks more idiotic... That being said, that thing in the picture is absolutely absurd! What is that-an xbox? Geez ...

I believe so look how far Android evolved from 4.5" while the Iphone is sooo far behind in technology and screen size

there is room to improve, manufacture just have to mipulate the location camera, charger, speaker phone etc..... to diffirence location and not depend on hardware/composite navigation, but more software navigation(Not like the nexus because it still take up space, should be take advatage of swipe gesture to navigate) then even the Note 2 will feel like 4.6.

The question is how long will it take Apple to hit 5 inches? I do believe 5 inch 1080p is the max for a mainstream phone. I have a note 2 and love but it's not for everyone.
