TOMS, the maker of all things shoes and comfortable, has outed Apple Watch bands in its distinctive styling that has become popular around the globe. And, of course, TOMS being TOMS, the shoe-maker is giving a year worth of solar power to a household in need in developing countries.

Solar has the potential to come to the rescue of areas without solid electrical grid infrastructure, and make household largely autonomous. That has sparked a deluge of international projects that develop and distribute affordable solar power solutions for off-the-grid living, aimed at underdeveloped areas. It is easier and cheaper than creating a whole network from scratch. The same premise holds true for trying to reach those communities with projects around smartphones, mobile banking or cheap Internet that Facebook, Google and some microfinance projects are trying to accomplish.

Currently, TOMS has a charity program in place where it donates a pair of shoes to a person in need for each one you buy from them, and the Apple Watch bands are now another way to keep the spirit of the brand intact, all the while delivering fresh ways to liven up your popular wearable. There are two sets to choose from - the $49 Utility Collection with woven design, and a $75 Artisan Collection that that consists of leather straps. The choice is dizzying, but whichever you pick, that's a year of solar light for a household in Africa thanks to the TOMS' Give Time initiative, in partnership with SolarAid and Solar Sister.
