Surprise! BlackBerry reports a profit for the fourth quarter although revenue comes in below expectations

BlackBerry surprised Wall Street and Main Street by reporting that it earned a profit of $28 million, or 5 cents a share, for the fourth quarter ended February 28th. A year earlier, the company reported a loss of $148 million, or 28 cents a share. Removing one-time items from the bottom line, BlackBerry turned a profit of $20 million, or 4 cents a share. Wall Street expected the company to report a loss of 4 cents a share for the period...

Haters gonna hate, huh? Did you listen to the earnings call? No? Because I did. Don't talk before you've gotten all of the facts. "Chen further clarified the data, with the 90 percent consisting of the Passport and Classic." That was taken from here: https://n4bb.com/blackberry-10-smartphones-90-shipped-devices-q4-fy-2015/ BlackBerry posted a profit. They made positive cash flow on hardware. Software is up 20%. Cash on hand is up, from $3.1 billion to $3.27 billion. BlackBerry is essentially starting over, and doing a great job of it. You don't have to think that's impressive, as I doubt your opinion matters to BlackBerry. Or me, for that matter. I'm posting FACTS. Now go and troll elsewhere.

That can't be possibly correct. If the average sale price was $218 it would literally be impossible for the Passport and Classic to consist of 90% of the sales as these phones sell for $400-600 each (varying prices depending on region). That would require the remaining 10% to pretty much be free and even then the the lowest ASP one can get is about $350-400. That would also mean that not a single other phone that was BB10 was sold during the last quarter and it was entirely made up of Passports and Classics which is completely unbelievable as well. Chen only said 90% of phones sold were BB10 which is very plausible but to say that all were Passports and Classics is just laughable, and that "clarification" is the only source of it. Those are facts. It's not trolling to question a claim, what is trolling is attacking someone for asking for data validation.

I validated it. I even gave you the source, and went even further and told you that he actually said it during the earnings call. What more do you need, especially since I spoon-Fed you all of the information? I also know for a fact that Chen knows more about what BlackBerry has sold, and what types of BB10 smartphones have sold vs others. You can try and disprove it all you want. I'm going with the source, John Chen, any day over a troll like you. And don't act like you aren't one. You've trolled many BlackBerry articles in the past.

31. Rydsmith unregistered

I don't think you understand what the word validate means.... Since you "validated" it, what was the sales mix? Can you please call Chen and ask him for me because I'm curious how 100% of the phones sold of BB10 were only of the Passport and Clssic variant? You're giving "facts" but when asked to supply the data that supports the aforementioned information (as the number is literally impossible to get to using one the Classic and Passport sales mix and all other devices at $0) you call me a troll and just a go "I'm right. You're wrong. Lalalalalala I can't hear you!" I guess this the difference between having a career that requires critical thinking and having a job that asks "would you like fries with that." The ability to accept anything as fact from anywhere. Update: Chen says that 100% of his employees use iPhones. I said it here, so it's official and validated. Yeah...that's not how it works.

It amazes me just how lazy you are. LOOK IT UP. I provided an article, which also had a source. If your too lazy to look it up for yourself, that your problem. It also amazes me how low you are willing to go because you can't stand to see BlackBerry doing well, like you're some scorned lover. I'm not providing anymore information for you. You don't want to look it up, or don't know where to look, that's your business. Furthermore: The people who say "would you like fries with that" work FOR me. That would be you.

I normally don't reply to troll (you), but this time, I help you. The information you provide is NOT valid, or has a problem. Because there can't be 90% passport & classic, if the ASP is US$218. This is the reason that Rydsmith were asking you over and over. You should LEARN to provide a LEGITIMATE answer and LINK over the internet. NOT everything in internet is right/true. And you should also know that YOU were considered TROLLING in here by refusing to ACCEPT the COMMON UNDERSTANDING (90% passport & classic & ASP of US$218 is A LIE). I know you love Blackberry so much, or being paid by Blackberry to post here, but be a gentlemen, if someone point your mistake, don't TROLL. You're making blackberry name even worse by trolling. Don't let the rest of the world portraying Blackberry user as troll.

I always find it incredibly ironic when a troll seeks to call others a troll. Anyway, The information that I provided is coming straight from the source itself. It's from the man who actually runs the company, and had you listened to the earnings call, or read the transcript, you would know this. You're not speaking to some idiot, or to someone that creates accounts merely to make an OEM/OS look bad and to bash them. That's what you do. Simply because I choose to the person/people that run the company as opposed to people who just talk negatively about the company in EVERY ARTICLE posted here on PA doesn't make me a troll. Look up the definition of troll, and you will see that the definition pertains to YOU. I have already PROVEN you to be a troll when I called you out in this article when you made the very first trolling comment: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Apple-iPhone-6-was-the-most-popular-device-last-quarter-says-new-report-by-Good-Technology_id67558 So, before you seek to call me a troll simply because I choose to defend the brand that I use as opposed to jumping on the "Death to BlackBerry" bandwagon like YOU, remember the article above and your comment you posted in it.

"asking for data validation." That would be called lazy. There's an 11-page PDF with all the numbers you need, look for it.

34. Rydsmith unregistered

Which isn't giving the per device breakdown of sales to validate the outrageous 90% claim.

Sure it is. Read it. Or go and look up an audio copy of the earnings call. I've done my due diligence. Now do yours.

There was even a freaking LIVE CHAT BLOG as a source, as well a number to call in and listen to the earnings call "highlighted" in blue. How lazy can you be?

44. Rydsmith unregistered

From the call. Operator We'll go to our next question from Brian Prohm of Cowen and Company. Brian Prohm A couple quick questions one on hardware. I think you said 90% of revenue was from the new devices? John Chen I said, we ship 90 plus percent of the shipment in the quarter are new products Passport, classic type. Brian Prohm Digging into that a bit then. Can you give us any incremental color on the Classic split of those shipments, and whether the demand dynamics for that product are consistent with your expectations? John Chen Look I have always am caution with that -- the statement. But look as I said the early numbers looks encouraging, so I think Classic is doing reasonably well.. So no... 90% of the phones sold were not 90% Passports and Classics. When pressed harder he shut down and gave a vague answer.

56. meanestgenius

Posts: 21331; Member since: May 28, 2014

You finally did your own research! Bravo! And he said that 90 plus percent of the shipment in the QUARTER are new products Passport, Classic type. Thanks for proving me right. ;)

64. Rydsmith unregistered

No. You said that the Passport and Classic accounted for 90% of the 1.6 million sold. Nowhere is that said, they SHIPPED 90% of their units as Passports and Classics. You cannot extrapolate that the sell through was also 90% newer Blackberries. That would be correlatively incorrect to make that assertion when it could have been 80% BB7 devices with the newer ones just sitting in a stock room. Stop trying to make Blackberry into the father you didnt know and feel the need to protect him due to some messed disassociated connection.

Are you blind? Or is it that you just can't read? It says right there in the source YOU are quoting that 90 plus percent of the shipment in the quarter were new products Passport and Classic. They also said that they have almost no legacy devices left, so I don't know where you're getting your assertions from. What is it with you and your unnatural hate for BlackBerry? Were you touched by a BlackBerry as a child? Did John Chen spurn your advances? Stop trying to make BlackBerry look bad at every turn like you're some abused child seeking revenge for a BlackBerry touching your "special place". It's quite disturbing. Dude, I'm also through dealing with you. Not only is my point proven and BlackBerry posted decent quarterly results as I said they would, no where near the doom and gloom that you no doubt were hoping for, but you're a RACIST. You let that cat out the bag a few comments ago. I absolutely do not converse with ignorant, racists such as yourself, who no doubt wish he was still out "clubbing the colored folk". I know you need me to justify your existence, that's why you keep seeking me out on BlackBerry articles from time to time. You will no doubt prove me right, once again I might add, by continuing to "petition" for my justification of your existence.

Rydsmith, The blackberry way of telling people is... They write the fact on the 11 page PDF, saying nothing. and then they spread the lie using a "private interview", "phone call interview" and the BB fans will cheer and acept the lie as fact. I also always wondering when meanestgenius claim that Blackberry were number #1 in enterprise, and very successfull in enterprise. Because how do we measure it.

89. meanestgenius

Posts: 21331; Member since: May 28, 2014

It's measured through their software. And no, there was no."private interview". The PDF is available for all to see, and the earnings call is available for all to listen to.

Rydsmit.... EAGLE EYES!!!! That's right.... They couldn't have ASP of 218 for selling 90% of Passport & Classic. John Chen is caught lying.

Totally agree with what Chen said. I don't lose sleep over them either. But they seem to be losing sleep over BlackBerry performing better with each quarter.

That's because he's being paid with lots of $$$$ whether BB die or survive. On the other hand, crackberry should loosing sleep because BB is not going better.

I hope BB/JC will provide more guidance, but here is my try at calculating it. Suppose ASP for Passport = $550, Classic = $375, Z3 = $200. I want to know the possible maximum number for Passport+Classic combo. So, passport = 0. ONLY IF Z3 were 89.75% & classic is 10.25%. They got the ASP of US$217.94. If classic & passport is about the same number. Z30 need to be more than 93%. I guess John Chen were twisting the fact. Passport & Classic is the one that opposite of 90%. (bellow 10%).

Congrats, BlackBerry! Once again you have proven that staying the course and having a definite game plan pays off. Gross margins on hardware are up. Asp's are up. Cash in the bank is up. Software revenue increased. Over 90% of devices sold were Passports and Classics this quarter. Passports and Classics are selling well at AT&T and Verizon as per early reports. So much for reports about Passports not selling well. BlackBerry is trending in the right direction. John Chen has put the ship back on course. Kudos, BlackBerry. Well done.
