Sprint's iDEN network shuts down tonight at 12:01am Sunday

0. phoneArena posted on 29 Jun 2013, 17:12

Just a reminder; if you still have a Sprint branded phone that connects to the carrier's iDEN network, the network goes dark at 12:01 am EDT. Last year, Sprint stopped selling phones for the pipeline, informing its customers that the network would be turned off on June 30th, 2013. Hopefully everyone affected has heard the news...

Unappealing company (Sprint) buys good company (Nextel). Proceeds to destroy all good companies deed. Unappealing company gets bought by better company (SoftBank). Better company decides to keep unappealing companies name.

I guess it's like back in the 70's-90's. Can't afford a Ford? Buy it's generic little brother. Mercury.
-SoftBank. Enough foresight that if Sprint STILL sucks to not tarnish its name directly.

Generic little brother, Mercury? Your analogy makes no sense. You must not realize that Mercury vehicles were made by Ford & since there was a Mercury luxury version of each Ford vehicle, they were actually more expensive.

Kinda like Toyota and Lexus. Both are the same company, except no one brags about driving a Toyota.

One problem with your analogy is that Mercury cars were the high end entry level luxury models of their Ford counterparts. They are more expensive than Fords... Nextel was good and would have remained so, except for the fact it was not upgradable and would have failed anyway in today's smartphone market. There are not enough users left that just want talk and PTT to sustain the iDEN network. Sprint did, however completely mishandle the merger and make a mess of the whole thing. Sprint would be in a much better position if it weren't for Gary Forsee's failed run as CEO.

I hate to see Nextel go. I had it for many years and had excellent service and customer service was top notch. It all started with my i550. Yes all you could do was make a call and PTT but it worked flawlessly. It's an old technology but there is a reason why 1.3 million people are holding onto it until the very last day. There is plenty of businesses that only need to communicate and have no need for data. Nextel stood for reliability which Sprint does not.

They are supposed to use the nextel 800 band for 4G data and building penetration, they have to switch it over to compete with Verizon and At&t; something is going on now cause my prl change to 2000 on GN2

I for one, am so happy this company was put to death. There have never been such a bunch of annoying people, like Nextel customers. I don't want to hear your phone chirp, and hear your stupid, loud conversations. Good riddance and never come back.
