Trimester means three months. A fiscal "quarter" is also three months. What a coincidence.

Can phoneguy say "duh".

A trimester is three months in the context of pregnancy. Otherwise it is "one of three terms" into which a period of time is divided. Since quarterly reports are what they are, trimester is not the correct word.

well the nightmare of the Nextel purchase is almost over...I always wondered how many of those losses per quarter resulted from Nextel customers defecting

Actually a "fiscal" quarter and trimester are not one in the same. A quarter is 1/4 of something, a year is twelve months. 1/4 of a year is three months, are you following? A fiscal quarter is a period of which a business reports it's financials, not all business have the same fiscal year. A trimester is a 1/3 of something, (not always 3 months like a pregnancy.) a trimester for a year would be 1/3 of the year and since year is 12 months then a fiscal trimester for a year would be 4 months. Catching on? Therefore a fiscal quarter is a quarter not a trimester It's unfortunate that it had to be explained using deductive reasoning and basic math but that's the unfortunate part of society. Thank you, have a nice day.
