Spectrum In 700 MHz Bid Finally Up For Sale

After years of debate on how to go about selling spectrum in the 700 MHz band, the FCC today begins Auction 44 for wireless frequencies. The sale will include 740 licenses and likely will continue for the next few weeks.

The FCC has approved 125 bidders in the sale, most of which are small carriers and spectrum clearinghouse businesses. Bidders forking over the largest amounts of cash include Aloha Partners, which made a $14.5 million upfront payment; Council Tree Wireless, with a $6.5 million payment and DataComm Wireless, offering a $5 million payment before bidding began this morning.
