Sony's new look: Xperia XZ2 leaks in shiny render, specs revealed by insider

Well, folks, MWC is about to kick off and we sure can't wait to see what surprises lie ahead! Unfortunately, in the era of leaks and rumors, surprises are often ruined. And someone may have just spilled the beans on what Sony has in store for us.

Among the army of new gadgets, we expect to see the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact to come and refresh the line. Serial leakster Evan Blass, who is pretty spot-on with his information most of the time, has shed some light on what the phones would be like. Sony is about to do something that we heard in rumors before, but still dared not think of — a re-design!

OK, let's not get that dramatic. The leaked render of the Xperia XZ2 does show a modern shift in looks, but we can definitely see the Sony Omnibalance design language DNA still in there. The biggest change is the display — we now have an 18:9 screen up front, meaning Sony was rather quick at embracing that trend. Then, we have an arched back — something we saw with the Xperia XA2 and Xperia L2 earlier this year and we found it to be quite comfy on the hand.

We also see a finger pad on the back for a fingerprint scanner! As you probably know, Sony has been unable to sell phones with functional fingerprint scanners in the US for some years now. This was due to a mysterious carrier deal that went sour some time in the past (details were never made public, and probably never will). However, it seems that whatever legal bond Sony had has expired by 2018 since the XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 launched with fully functioning finger scanners on the US market. And it appears that the flagship Xperia XZ2 is about to follow suit!

Furthermore, the leakster claims that both the Xperia XZ2 and the Compact will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with a 3,180 mAh battery for the big one and a 2,870 mAh cell on the small one. The main camera would have a 19 MP sensor, an F1.8 aperture lens, and capabilities to record 4K HDR video as well as the super-slow-motion that debuted with last year's XZ Premium.

Now, that Xperia XZ2 render shows that the phone is a glass-and-metal sandwich, but we've no idea whether it would support wireless charging or not. According to the leak, the body is ingress-protected — as usual — and the phone would have a set of “S Force” stereo speakers. It sure sounds powerful, so let's hope they sound better than Sony's previous, tinny-sounding attempts.

The Xperia XZ2 Compact, on the other hand, will have a polycarbonate body and won't haul the new stereo speakers.

According to the leak, the colors we will get to see the phones in are black, silver, green, and pink. Though there might be slight variations or unique hues swapped between the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact.
