Sony reveals it's developing a new launcher to replace Xperia Home
After Sony revealed that no further features would be added to its Xperia Weather app, it didn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that the Xperia Home Launcher was also entering maintenance mode, leading many to assume future Sony smartphones would simply make use of the stock Android launcher. However, it turns out this won’t be the case, with the Japanese company confirming that it’s working on an Xperia Home replacement.

Currently, it's unclear what kind of changes Sony has planned, but considering it’s decided to scrap the previous launcher altogether and start again, the Japanese brand certainly appears to have something big in the works, possibly a new UI that makes better use of the new gesture controls that are arriving with the Android P release.

Regardless of what the new launcher will bring, the company is yet to reveal any details in terms of a launch timeline, or how long the new launcher has been in development for – it could simply be a new idea following user backlash – but if it does have anything to do with the gesture controls, the Japanese brand could opt to include the Xperia Home replacement in a future Android P beta release, a move that would allow it to be tested among a limited number of Xperia XZ2 users before a much wider rollout.
