Sony claims the Z3 is the best cameraphone among leading smartphones, here's why

Sony's affinity for attaching a "Best" tag on its smartphones has a track record that now spans several generations. Indeed, whenever a new Sony device hits the market, there's at least one category in which the company sees it as best on the market, and it makes sure that you're well aware of that -- usually through PRs and its own website. Almost exactly a year ago, we detailed why it considered the Xperia Z1 to be the best cameraphone in the whole wide world, and now it's time to take a look at the new and hot Xperia Z3...

I do believe that Z2 & Z3 have the best cameras on android & ios environment. I shoot the images myself and i'm not a photographer, I am just a noob that likes to go out there and shoot things. And I seriously doubt that i6+, note 4, LG G3, can produce such quality night & indoor shots. I ain't no scientist but I know two formulas that are facts. People who say Z2&Z3 cameras are bad are either: 1. Never own Z2 or Z3 2. They own one but don't know how to use it Case closed

That link is broken, and FYI any recent smartphone can take quality pictures as evident by PhoneArena's photos taken by users contests. And the time i spent with the Z1 (someone very close to me owned it for 2 months) the 20 megapixel camera isn't that great, in indoors my M7 camera was better most of the time, the Z1 had very noticeable artifacts in low light pictures that made them look horrible. (Z2 and Z3 might have improved in these aspects, i don't own either nor have used them)

My Z1 takes wonderful photos indoors but better outdoors for sure. Although, there can be variables such as photographer, subject matter, overall ambient lighting and even sensor and lens longevity. Overall, I like the Z1 camera. It does the job that I need it to do fairly well. Give an amateur a leica m9 and a proffesional a Minolta 35mm film camera and the pro will outshine the amateur. Cheers!

I'm a so called Lumia fanboy and I have an Xperia Z2 that takes pictures that are comparable to some shots taken with my Lumia 1020. Z2 has great colours, great image quality, great software and everything. You can't go wrong with it but if you really need the best camera in a smartphone you should buy a Lumia (1020, 1520, Icon, 930 etc.)

I agree. I am a DP here in LA and there is always debates on which camera's are the best. Honestly, some cameras just have bigger sweet spots than others. If you know the cameras limitations and strengths then you can capture amazing images. I have seen amazing stuff shot on iPhone. I recently got a Z2 because iPhone doesn't have the ability that the Z2 has. The Z3 has even more wiggle room with manual setting to expose up or down. This creates opportunities to make "pro" type of shots if you know how to edit. We shoot flat in the industry and color correct in post then color grade afterwards. For those that want a point, shoot and deliver. Get an iPhone. Just saying.

They didn't test the Z3 against any Nokia Windows Phones eh? No matter. The Z3 will be my next phone on day one. Can't wait.

Sony camera phone sensors are among the best BUT Sony is terable at the software side, when other manufacturers use the same sensor they produce a better picture with way less compression.

Among current flagships-maybe. But all-time best -no way. 808, 1020 and even 1520 dethrone Z3 in photo quality. Video quality is another story, though. Sound quality of videos is the only part where it lags behind and it still has a lot a space for improvement. Z3 can't hold a candle to good old 808 in that department.

I have no doubt with the 808/1020 But 1520 dethrone Z3 in photo quality i'm not sure about that this crops is from GsmArena image comparison tool.

And that's exactly the point, most of us are interested that our photos look good to common people (friends, colleagues, grandma, etc), personally I don't care what a panel of photography experts has to say about my shots.

All these "808 and 1020 cams are the best" comments I dont see in other cameraphone articles. Only in Sony. If it wasnt on long loading tines, 1020 is my best cameraphone.

Because Sony needs to step off their high horse and stop claiming they have the best camera phone when clearly they don't.

Hmm ... atleast Nokia sets a standard for them. Nokia is like motivation for other OEM's. From design to durability to everything else :)

I see them everywhere and always agree. I have Lumia 1020 and it's THE BEST CAMERAPHONE. But I also have Xperia Z2 which has almost the same camera as the Z3 and it performs amazingly well. Great pictures, great colours, great everything. Only thing is... As it always is with smartphones with "best" cameras... It just can't come even close to Lumia's picture quality or anything. Lumia just is the best along with 808 PureView and newer flagship Lumias.

guys off topic planning to get a z1 is it good now or else can i get something else ?

Only benefit from Z1 is having the purple color which I like. Battery life with a coc, ff6, Raiden, YouTube, mp3 and extensive Web surfing reading news comes to 28-36% over 12hrs of usage every 2hrs. Since the update with color management setting my battery life has improved (prior was 7-11% by 12hrs of usuage) Just do yourself a favor and get the z3, my fingers hurt like hell holding my Z1 for long periods of time cuz of its weight. Btw, screen brightness can be blinding on the z3 at night.

Interesting comparison. Although judging from Sony's old camera that weren't particularly good. Now it looks okay but noise is so high.

Full auto shoot-out with the best Lumias: Lots and lots of noise on the Sony shots when you look closer, and the dark shots are completely over-exposed. Zoom is also practically broken. No physical OIS and no stereo recording... Seriously, Sony?!?
